Peridot still wasn't entirely certain what the point of this holiday was, but she was aware that she had gotten flowers. 31 flowers, in fact, in various colors. All 31 of them, the roses and carnations alike, were tucked neatly into her hair. She had enough of it, after all, and no idea what to do with flowers besides. It made for a rather glorious flower crown, if Peridot did say so herself.

Pumpkin, not to be left out, also had the orange carnation that Summer had sent to her tied to her stem. She was keeping Peridot company today at the library, napping on top of the desk while Peridot sorted through books to put away, a silly little smile on her face.

This planet was so strange. But that was okay.

Tip had been taking pictures of Kanan in action. Plenty of her pictures already had motion blur. "I'm guessing those are rocks," she said. "Your pictures will definitely be unique."

"Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica," Peridot said, her tone perhaps unsurprisingly excited for someone who was talking about rocks. "It's composed of quartz and moganite. Agate is mostly chalcedony, but it's composed in alternating layers with microgranular quartz!"

She paused, and then added for ease of comprehension, "Agate is striped."

Tip laughed. "Thanks for that. They sound really neat. But remember, Mr. Hardison said to get lots of different photos."

Said the girl who had spent all week taking photos of people.

Peridot blinked at that.

"But I did," she replied. "I got Pumpkin with the chalcedony, and pumpkin with the agate. Pumpkin with some quartz, and then there was her with the kyanite, and the amazonite, and the epidote!"

Hashtag certified Kindergartener.

"Well. So long as you have Pumpkin in the pictures," Tip said with a laugh. "Does she wear any of them like hats? Fetch them like balls?"

"Only the ones she can lift," Peridot explained. "A lot of them are trapped in boulders in the rocks, so she just sort of has to sit near them."

Peridot paused, and then leaned in to whisper conspiratorially.

"Don't worry, I made sure she was always in focus."

So basically what was going to happen here, was that everyone who wasn't a geologist was going to see this as a whole roll of photos of a jackolantern.

"I bet she looks really pretty."

Well, photos of a jackolantern and of Peridot's stray finger wandering into frame for at least a third of them.

"Pumpkin always looks pretty! Just look at her now!"

Sitting there on the desk with an orange carnation fastened on top of her! What wasn't to love?

Yeah, Tip was definitely getting a shot of that, too.

"Okay, now both of you together," she said. "A whole family portrait thing."

"Family portrait?"

Peridot wasn't familiar with the phrase, no. But that wasn't stopping her from scooting over so that she could scoop Pumpkin up into her arms and smile for the camera, either.

"Earth tradition," Tip said. "You get your family together and take a picture. Then you can post them online or send copies to your friends or just keep them around for those times when you guys can't be together for whatever reason." She was not planning to get into what some of those reasons could be, no. "It's kind of a way to be all 'hey world, look how awesome we are!'"

'Alien invasion' being listed off as one of those reasons could have potentially made the conversation go a little awkward. And Peridot didn't even want to get into her feelings about mortality, yet. Good call, Tip!

"Well, we are both very awesome," she noted, smiling down at Pumpkin. "May I have a copy of this... family portrait... when it's developed?"

"Of course," Tip said. "Assuming I don't totally ruin the negatives trying to develop it, of course. I've never actually done that part before."

She was super excited to learn that part.

Peridot tilted her head thoughtfully, and then set Pumpkin back down on the desk and nodded.

"That's the part of the process that involves chemicals, isn't it?"

Chemistry? Peridot could do chemistry.

"Yup. Lots of chemicals, in a specific order. And as little light as possible until they've . . . I don't know, set or whatever."

Peridot's eyes went wide.

"... I think this might be my favorite art," she shared. "It's the first one that's really made any sort of sense to me, anyway."

Well, it would until somebody decided to have a conversation with her about composition and lighting.

"It's one of my favorites, too," Tip admitted. "I used to carry an old polaroid of Mom's around with me everywhere I went. I even documented the whole Boov invasion with it."

"Photographic documentation of a hostile takeover? That must be quite the collection of images," Peridot replied, eyes widening a little. "I've... never really seen an invasion from... you know... your side of it. I suppose it'll be a matter of time before Homeworld realizes Earth is in one piece still and that will all change."

"Mostly it's shots of me and J.Lo goofing around," Tip admitted. "When it comes right down to it, even in invasions, people are still just . . . people."

Peridot chewed her lip at that.

"That sounds so... simple," she replied. "As of 'people are people' is something that ought to be a universal sentiment. It's... it's still new, for me."

"There are different ways for people to be people," Tip said slowly, parsing her thoughts out as she went. "Like . . . when the Homeworld was enacting their big plans, you were still doing your think in the Kindergarten, right? And here, while you're learning how other people are people, you're still using your art project to get pictures of the stuff you care about. I guess what I really meant was, people are always going to find a way to do their thing, whatever else is going on."

Peridot opened her mouth for a moment, about to note that she hadn't even been made yet, back when Homeworld was first trying to take over Earth. But that was largely irrelevant to the point that Tip was making, besides.

She frowned thoughtfully, instead.

"Once people know that doing their thing is an option, and once they have the freedom to, you mean?"

In the end, that had been her stinking point before Earth. Being people had never been an option.

"Well . . . yeah. And you enjoyed doing your work, didn't you? I know you're proud of how good at it you were. Even if you didn't have a choice in it, it's still part of what makes you you."

"It is," Peridot allowed, pacing a little lap around the desk. "And I am. I might not have had a choice about being a Peridot, but I worked hard to be the Peridot I thought my Diamond needed me to be."

Which was something that would stay with her for a long while, whether Yellow deserved it or not.

"And that's part of what makes you the Peridot that we all know and love," Tip said. "Just because some people are complicated doesn't mean they aren't still people."

Peridot nodded thoughtfully.

"I understand that now," she offered. "More easily than I did before, when a Peridot was just a Peridot and a human was just a human. I think I'm still picking up on the finer points, though."

"That's alright, so am I."

That earned a little smile from Peridot.

"Is that a part of people being people, too?"

"Man, I hope so," Tip said. "Because otherwise, every person I've ever met's got a big problem."

Peridot actually laughed a little at that, ducking her head and smiling.

"Around here, would that really be so strange, though?"

She'd finally been on Earth long enough to understand that the island was strange, even by the standards of the rest of the planet.

"Faaaaiiiiir," Tip said, rubbing her mouth. "I'll take the strange around here over the stupid back home any day, though."

"That makes two of us," Peridot decided. "But I guess that goes without saying, doesn't it?"

'Back home' kind of tried to blow her up.

"I kind of figured, yeah," Tip said. "But I don't mind if you want to say it anyway."

"Well, then." Peridot stopped in her lap around the desk and looked up at Tip, giving her a firm nod. "Then that definitely makes two of us."
