Practical Diplomacy

Today the class was back in the Danger Shop, but instead of a press conference, it was set up to look like an extremely stuffy reception. Waitstaff of various species wove through the crowd offering appetizers and drinks as people made smalltalk and tried to look and be as interesting as possible.

Anakin hated these events. "Right," he said to the class. "A huge part of your job as a diplomat will be making and maintaining contacts, and excruciatingly dull receptions is an excellent time to do so. Your job today is to find and remember three separate beings' names and what they do while holding a glass of something and eating a plate of appetizers. It's not nearly as easy as it sounds. You must also give them a false name and backstory. Silly accents are entirely optional."

"My goodness," Sidon nearly bellowed when he made the rounds and came to Master Skywalker, barely containing his grin, "I am quite certain we have not been acquainted. I am," and here he gracefully bowed despite every fiber of his being wanting to pump his fist, "Vahn Ruto, of the dry desert land of Azorilandia! Who might you be?"

He thought he was being devishish by turning it around on the teacher and putting him in a situation to pretend as well.

"I am Ben Kenobi," Anakin replied, "and the host of this event. If we aren't acquainted, how did you come to be on the guest list?"

"Ahhhhh," Sidon drew it out a little while his brain caught up with the silly little gaffe, "why, Ben Kenobi, of course! How foolish of me! Why, you look so different from last we saw each other! Surely, you must be working out! Either that, or I've had just a touch too much of your fine fizzy beverages! The good wait staff might be well advised to cut me off, but I do get so carried away when surrounded by such company. Well done, sir; you put on a truly splendid reception."

Anakin grinned. Good recovery, Sidon!

"The wait staff is very attentive," he agreed. "I find that it helps the conversation flow."

"Absolutely," Sidon agreed with enthusiasm, matching (well, perhaps surpassing; it was hard to match a person's grin exactly when you had teeth like his). "I have met so many wonderful new people today. It is truly an event I cannot wait to tell everyone in Azorilandia about; they will all be turning green at the gills with envy!"

"Who did you enjoy the most?" Anakin asked. "There are so many interesting beings here."

"You speak the truth," Sidon said with a chuckle, "and while everyone has been truly astonishing and quite entertaining, I must say, I was most excited to meet none other than the Percival Prenderghast! Can you believe it? Oh, but of course you can, as you are the one who invited him! So I can imagine that you can understand why a Azoralandian such as myself, from such a dry, sandy place with little to no water to speak of, would be so delighted to meet a sand merchant with the caliber that someone of that name holds!"

...yeah, Sidon was having way too much fun with this.
