Earth Zoology, Wednesday

"Hello, class!" Jenkins greeted as the students gathered. He was somewhat out of uniform this week, his usual three piece suit missing its vest and jacket, its pants tucked into tall rubber boots. He wore thick leather gloves on both hands that extended up past his elbows. "Do come in and find your seats quickly this week, please. I'm afraid this week's specimen may not stay secured for long."

There were teeth marks on the boots and gloves. Jenkins seemed entirely too cheerful for a man who had apparently recently been chewed upon by something with small, extremely pointy teeth.

"I originally had an entirely different lesson planned," he said, "but we shall have to wait on that until next week. When one finds as fascinating a creature as the one I am about to show you scurrying about in one's own classroom, that is an opportunity he simply cannot pass up. Though — I suppose those of you with chewable flesh may want to don some protective clothing before we get started."

There were three pairs of boots sitting under the table, one pair in each of his students' sizes, and a pair of gloves placed on top of each. Peridot might not need them, after all, but that didn't mean she mightn't enjoy playing dress up with her classmates, anyway.

Once everyone who wanted to gear up had done so, Jenkins set a sturdy wooden box on the table. He opened the latch and immediately shoved his gloved hand through the opening to make sure the creature didn't escape. When he withdrew it, he was holding something small, green, and to Peridot, certainly, very familiar.

"This, students, is what's known as a gremlin. In particular, this Fandom's own native variety, which has some marked differences from those that live in other locations: most notably a highly potent psychotropic quality to their venom. I do not recommend allowing one to bite you, unless you enjoy making a fool of yourself in front of your friends."

The gremlin locked its teeth into the meaty part of Jenkins' thumb, but hadn't managed to gnaw its way through the leather, just yet. Jenkins watched it work with an expression of benign interest.

"The town records are quite rife with the adventures of these little creatures," he said. "It seems they have particular taste for one local family, though as far as I know, no one has managed to determine quite why. They also occasionally can be found singing festive songs around the holidays, and have in fact assisted the humanoids of Fandom in clearing more troublesome invaders more than once."

He gently pried the gremlin's jaws open and detached it from his hand, then set it back into the box, holding it in place by the back of its neck while he checked to be sure it hadn't managed to break through the leather. Though he had every intention of milking the creature to study its venom after class, he wasn't looking to feel its effects first hand.

Not just yet, at the very least.

"On the mainland, gremlins are primarily known for their affinity for breaking mechanical contraptions, most especially airplanes. They first rose to prominence in the public eye during a series of violent conflicts known as the Second World War, one of the first events to feature airplanes on a global scale, but they've been known to mess with anything technical of sufficient complexity. I've long suspected that they are evolutionary offshoots of goblins, a race of fairly rambunctious creatures often lumped with elves and other creatures under the title 'fairy', though I haven't managed to prove it, just yet. Perhaps our friend here will prove to be of some assistance after class. In the meantime, come have a look." Having ensured his glove was still intact, Jenkins offered the gremlin his hand to gnaw on again, stroking it between the ears with the other one. "It seems a perfectly reasonable creature, all told," he mused. "So long as you make sure it has something other than yourself between its teeth."

Peridot, for one, was quite thrilled to see one of her little minions in the classroom today!

If slightly disappointed in it for allowing itself to be captured.

"You know," Peridot said, leaning in to inspect the cranky gremlin with her arms crossed over her chest, "if you were more selective about who you decided to bite, you wouldn't be in this mess."

There was a momentary pause, and then she added, "I'll buy you a donut later, once Jenkins lets you go again."

Never let it be said Peridot wasn't a magnanimous Queen.
