Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques | Tuesday, per. 2

"Today," Hannibal announced to the students, "we're going to discuss measuring. When following recipes, it's important to measure correctly. Dry ingredients and wet ingredients are measured differently."

He discussed how the most common items are measured, then presented them all with a simple recipe. "Today, you are each going to make a batch of these cookies. We will discuss each step as we go through it - how to properly position the oven racks and pre-heat it, how to measure everything, and how to cook them. Please ask for any additional help you may need."

There are a lot of things to measure.

Honestly, Alluka shouldn't have come to class today.

She felt awful. Her head hurt, her body was one big ache, she couldn't properly breathe because her nose was so stuffed, and she had an ugly cough that kept sneaking up unexpectedly on her.

But Papa Hannibal had been teaching today, so she'd dragged herself to class.

She was... not absorbing much of the lecture, but she was here. Ish.

And possibly going to fall asleep at her desk.

That level of misery was difficult to miss. After the lecture, when everyone was headed to their stations, Hannibal stopped Alluka with a gentle hand on her shoulder. "My dear, are you feeling well enough to be here?"

Alluka's fuzzy brain took a bit to compute that into something reasonable.

She blinked blearily at him.

"I am here," she said, as reasonably as she could, "so... I, I think the answer is yes?"

It was a 'no'. But Alluka's answer was logical.

"Also, cookies," she admitted.

"Cookies are still not enough reason to make yourself more ill."

He led her away from her station and called up a comfortable chair and a blanket for her. "Sit. Sleep if you can. I will see if I have some cold medicine. Do you have a fever?" He felt her forehead.

Ringo sighed. She'd been in enough cooking classes to have gone over measurements before, but she was still a little put out by all this volume-based measuring. Back home anything dry would be measured by weight instead, and it just made so much more sense to her.

Ah, well. She could live with it, even if it was silly.

Hannibal smiled as he watched her. "Don't worry; you'll find you pick it up soon enough. But you should know how to work by volume as well as weight."

Ringo sighed again. "I know. All the American recipes are listed that way, after all." Stupid American recipes.

"American, French, and many others," Hannibal said. "It's a good skill to have."

Cookies! Ask for help if you need it.

Summer figured she could abandon her 'close enough' style of cooking for the sake of a class and for the promise of cookies at the end of it all. So she took a second to hone in her focus, dedicating herself to actually doing it right and proper. For some reason, it helped for her to think that they were in some dire situation (details unknown) that required her to do things just right or else the kitchen would explode or something.

I mean, around here, it probably could, anyway.

Hopefully not.

Hannibal wandered by and nodded, pleased to see she could focus like this.

She's here! Wishing she had more coffee this morning because all these measurements and preciseness were just a little too much for her attention span. Summer liked to think of herself as more of an intuitive cook...

I want cookies.
