Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques | Tuesday, per. 2

"Hello to you all," Hannibal said when all the studensts were there. "This is Beginning Gourmet Cooking Techniques, and I am Doctor Hannibal Lecter. Welcome to a new semester. In class this term, we will be discussing a wide variety of things, from boiling water to managing a good sauce. For starters, however, today is for introductions. If each of you would, please, let us know your name, your prior experience with cooking, one thing you hope to learn from this class, and any allergies or sensitivities that you may have."

He gestured at the table next to him. "Also, I invite you all to eat." There were coffee, tea, and thick, homemade hot chocolate, along with hot sandwiches: spiced lamb patties with nutty garlic sauce, and cranberry grilled cheese.

"So." He nodded at the first student. "Begin."

"Then you shouldn't keep all the chocolate and marshmallows from me!" Alluka looked pleased with her logic. "Then there wouldn't be crying!"

Did this count as blackmail?

"That's blackmail!" Ringo accused.

Or maybe extortion?

"Nuh huh!" Alluka shook her head, pigtais flying about as she did. "I wouldn't be mean like that!"

Ringo raise an eyebrow. "Not even for chocolate?"

"I don't gotta be mean for that," Alluka said, all big eyes. "If you're mean to me, then Papa Hannibal and Papa Jono will fix it."

Especially Papa Jono.

She loved him, but he was kind of a sucker.

"That's because they spoil you," Ringo pointed out with a grin.

And then she stuck her tongue out for good measure.

"They do not," Alluka insisted, though they totally did.

She stuck her tongue out at Ringo in retaliation.

"Oh, they don't, huh?" Ringo smirked a little bit. "When was the last time you asked Jono for something and didn't get it?"

Uh.

Erm.

... huh.

Alluka's silence stretched as she thought about it. And thought about it.

She was going to be here a while.

Ringo was going to just going to give Alluka as much time as she needed and giggle.

Smugly.

So mean!

Alluka thought and thought and... couldn't really come up with anything.

"I'm still not spoiled," she said sulkily.

"Is being spoiled so bad?" Ringo asked, voice turning slightly serious even though her grin was still firmly in place.

The sudden turn confused Alluka.

"Is it?" she asked, making it a question on its own.

"Hmmm." Ringo considered that, then shrugged. "I don't think so? I mean, there's got to be a difference between being spoiled by people who care about you, and acting spoiled, right?"

"Is there?" Alluka asked. "If you're one, aren't you the other as well?"

"Well, I guess in a literal sense, you act however you are, but I guess I meant, um." Ringo frowned. "Like, most of the time when people say someone is acting spoiled, they mean, like, entitled or selfish or something? But people can totally spoil you, like, giving you presents when it's not your birthday or something, even if you don't act that way?"

Maybe? Now that she said it out loud, Ringo wasn't totally sure.

Alluka tried to figure that out.

"But, but wouldn't you still be spoiled?"

"But without acting spoiled, right?"

"But if you are spoiled, then isn't how you act how a spoiled person acts?" Alluka wondered.

"I guess it has to be in one way, but that's not really what people mean when they say someone's acting spoiled, is it? It means they act a specific way."

At least Ringo meant that sort of thing whenever she said someone was acting one way or another.
