Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Over on this part of the school lawn... yeah, it was still chilly. Stupid winter, doing its winter thing. But there were plenty of chairs and tables for people watching, feasting on warm foods and drinks, and generally attempting to meet the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Because they have enough of it."

It was factual information, even though it was a thing that didn't really compute with Octavia, either. She'd lived with severe rationing of food for most of her life.

"Odds are, this place is very different from where you came from," she added, dryly. Because she'd know.

"Yeah," Uma said. "But not all that different from the place right over the water from us."

Because, seriously, if this was what Auradon was like all the time, Uma was going to go back home and burn it all down.

"I don't know what that means."

Well, she didn't. Also, it was another factual statement, so, mild.

"The place I'm from doesn't have food like this," Uma clarified. "But the rest of the country does. I've just never been there."

The closest she'd been was a pleasure cruise ship docked off the shore. You know, to attempt to ensorcell the king and whatnot. As you did.

"Where I'm from," Octavia replied, slipping another non-messy piece of food into her pocket, "only one place had feasts like this."

She'd been very involved in killing its entire population.

So, like, could she offer pointers, or...?

"But how did that one group provide enough garbage to feed everybody else?" Uma asked, confused by how that could even work. "Did they just waste that much food?"

"They weren't feeding anyone else." So, that's how. "They were hiding from everyone else."

And occasionally kidnapping some of them to experiment on.

Octavia shrugged. "But we found them."

Uma didn't understand. If these people were hiding, how did they have the food? Food came from farms and fisheries and the woods; even just a few people needed acres and acres of land to hunt and gather or grow in. So how could a small group, in hiding, keep the food from everyone else, not in hiding?

She was curious, but there was one thing she was curious about more.

"What did you do when you found them?"

Turns out things were a little different when there was nuclear fallout involved!

"We flooded their home with radiation."

Even if Uma didn't know the word, she could probably pick up the implication from Octavia's tone. Along with the fact that she would do it again if she could.

Not a clue what that meant, no. But tone was clear and nothing good was ever described as 'flooded.'

"And then you got their food?" she asked with an approving nod.

Look, that was clearly the central part of the story here.

Octavia nodded.

"And their other resources."

And then all too soon after that, she'd found herself here. But her people had the Mountain Men's things and the mountain, and that was good enough.

Uma took a moment to imagine what the Isle would be like with even a tenth of the resources they had in the mainland. Just a tenth!

"What's radiation?"

Asking for a friend.

"Nuclear fallout." Octavia didn't think that cleared it up much if Uma didn't know what radiation itself was, but it was a start. "Basically, it's as if the air outside the mountain they lived in --" Yes, in. See above re: hiding. "-- was poisonous to them. And we let it in."
