Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Over on this part of the school lawn... yeah, it was still chilly. Stupid winter, doing its winter thing. But there were plenty of chairs and tables for people watching, feasting on warm foods and drinks, and generally attempting to meet the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Right, I'm not," Molly said with a shrug. "I wasn't quite expecting that, but then again, I'm not sure what I was expecting with going off to a weird mysterious boarding school." She shrugged like it was no big deal. "I'm from about one hundred years or so ago. Actually, one hundred-and-ten to be exact, I've figured out."

She gave a little wave. "I'm Molly. Molly Squidpiddge."

"Squidpiddge?"

Said the girl who was good friend with a whole family of Poopybuttholes.

But whatever. She still lifted a hand in a small wave of her own, glad that Molly seemed to at least get the whole time travel, different dimensions thing so far so it wasn't like...a thing. "I'm Summer. Summer Smith. And I'm inviting everyone to a New Years party tomorrow night in the second floor common room. I was hoping to add all the newbies to my phone for a mass text invite, but unless you have super special technology in your one-hundred-and-ten years ago, you probably don't have a phone, right?"

"Not that I can carry around with me," Molly said. "Or back in my old home, either. But I at least know what a telephone is. I'm definitely grateful for the personal invitation, though."

Pause. "Wait, so everyone carries around a telephone with them now?"

Oh, Molly. Did you have any idea what you just asked and to whom?

Summer's face brightened up.

"Uh, yuh," she said, whipping out her purple-cased phone before anyone could even blink. "Ta-da! Behold, the power of the twenty-first century! Believe me, the real way you can pinpoint which of us are from this time period that we're in right now is one of these bad-boys. A smartphone. It's honestly more of a little personal computer than it is just a phone, because who even makes calls anymore when you can just text someone? That means, like, you know how you probably write letters? And it takes, like, forever to show up? Well, with this, you can send letters to your friends and it shows up immediately, assuming they have a similar device. Not only that, but it takes pictures, and you can access the interner, which is like a super cool, uh...library, I guess? Where you can look up anything, and I mean literally anything, do not ever look at a teenage boy's browser history, you will regret it, unless you're into that, too, in which case that's totally cool, good on you. And then there are a lot of stupid games you can download to waste literally all the time in the world, and if you get a chance, you really need to get one of these things, they will change your life and immediate fast-pass into the twenty first century."

And then she took a breath, curling her fingers a little from all the work they got with flipping through everything as she described it to show Molly as best she could.

"Although mine's a little more advanced than what you normally find here? I had my friend Peridot, she's the little tiny angry green one with the pumpkin for a pet, enhance it with some technology from her own world and so now my phone can do this..."

Summer took a few moments to pull something up, turning her phone face down on her palm so it could project out a holographic gif.

"That," she said almost proudly, "is Zayn Malik. Also something not bad to know."

Molly had absolutely grabbed her reporter's pad and had started taking notes during Summer's excellent explanation. Then, she took the time to appreciate Zayn Malik, because that was a handsome hunk of young man.

"Wow. Is he a student here too?" Molly asked.

"Ha!" Summer couldn't help her bark of a laugh and she was already loving Molly to pieces. "I wish! There's, like, maybe a handful of cute guys at this school, there's a serious drought here, but all the cool ladies make up for it, don't worry, and he is, unfortunately, not one of them. He's formerly a member of a British boy band, but he's recently started in on his own solo career. And, if you were to get a phone of your own, you could actually download his songs and videos and, like, carry him in your pocket, in a way, so that's, you know, totally cool."

Cool. Not creppy. Shhhhh.

"I do like having men you can carry around with you," Molly said, thinking wistfully for a moment for her lost Philip. He was probably safe, wherever he was.

"Sounds like I'll have to get myself a phone. Which I suppose also means I'll have to find a place that sells them."

"There's a few places in town, I'm sure, or we can always plan a trip to the mainland," Summer offered. "Turtle & Canary seems to sell everything, but I'm not sure if they offer any good plans or whatever. There'll be time to check it out. Or hell, talk to Peridot if you get a chance. She could probably build you one from scratch and she loves that sort of thing, so she'll probably be happy to do it."

Not that she wanted to just up and volunteer her friend, but she was always complaining about how simple it was so it shouldn't be a problem.

"Peridot," Molly repeated, making both a mental note and a physical one. "You said something about her being green?"

She quick glanced around to see if she could spot the other girl. "Was that literally green?"

"Literally green," Summer nodded. "And tiny. Like, you probably can't see her over the crowd, because she's only, like," she lifted a hand to the approximation of three feet, "this tall."

"Green and short, I think I've got it," Molly said. "I'll try to find her sooner rather than later, I believe. Those phones sound positively fabulous. Thank you for telling me about them."

"Hey, no problem," said Summer. "You'll have to let me know your number once you do get one, and if you get a chance, swing by the second floor common room tomorrow night for our New Years party. She'll probably be there, too. Her pet pumpkin Pumpkin is the guest of honor!"
