Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Over on this part of the school lawn... yeah, it was still chilly. Stupid winter, doing its winter thing. But there were plenty of chairs and tables for people watching, feasting on warm foods and drinks, and generally attempting to meet the new folks!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It really did.

"Sometimes it's better not to know what it used to be," Uma said, putting it down on her plate. She frowned at the orange powder the curl left behind and licked it off. Huh. Not bad actually. "It true all this is really for anyone to eat?" she asked, skeptical.

She'd get around to introductions in a second, Tip, honest! But...food! She'd had a very long swim.

That was totally fair! Sometimes a girl just had to eat -- and make sure she wouldn't be arrested for doing so.

"Yup. Most of the food in the dorms is, too, unless it's in someone's private room or has their name on it or something. Not a lot of parties with buffets where you're form, huh?"

"Not a lot of parties where I'm from," Uma said, finally turning to look at the person talking to her. She gave a little nod of greeting, eyes flicking up to the hat.

Pfft, and you'd called her hat weird, Tip.

"Or food either. Nothing this fresh." Or fresh at all, unless 'fresh out' counted. "Does everyone live in the dorms?"

Her old school, Serpent Prep, hadn't had dorms. Hell, it had barely had books.

"Just about. I think there's a senior or two who lives off-campus, and the teachers and stuff live in town. But most of us students are all in there." She pointed out the dorm building. "It's pretty cool. No real curfew or rules or anything, other than just not being an asshole."

Would everyone just stop pointing her at stuff that made her stare like a slack-jawed yokel?

Okay, obviously not.

"That's a castle." You know, in case this girl had missed it.

Probably only if they stopped pointing at anything at all.

"Sort of," Tip said. "It's the school. I'm not sure if it started out as a castle or if the architects just really liked castles. But don't worry, not everyone who goes there is all rich and stuck up and stuff."

Some of them were. Some of them were royalty, even.

The ones who were royalty actually tended to be less likely to be stuck up, weirdly.

Sorry, the castle had absolutely caught her attention before the dorms had. Because it was a fucking castle.

"Okay, we are definitely in Auradon," Uma declared. "Because nobody but a bunch of fancy prim princes and princesses goes to school in a castle."

"I guarantee you it's not the Audubon," Tip said. "Or . . . whatever you just said. There is a prince, but he's a shark person. We have classes sometimes about how to survive being homeless."

Uma had met Sidon. Or, rather, Uma had stared and Sidon had introduced himself.

"I...I think I have that class," Uma said, looking at the list she'd been given. "Not sure what they think they can teach me... Does a place like this even have homeless people?"

There was a whole castle! And enough food to feed an army!

"I don't know if there are any on the island," Tip admitted. "But there are at least a few of us who've been homeless, one time or another."

Unfortunately, food and space weren't the only things required to prevent homelessness completely.

The 'us' got the girl another look and Uma nodded. "Uma," she said finally, holding out a hand clad in a fingerless glove ~~because villains all for fingerless gloves~~. "Daughter of Ursula. Never been homeless, exactly, but done my fair share of sleeping on the streets."

There had been times when sleeping on the streets had been better than going home to her mother.

Now she had her ship, though, and neither she nor her crew would ever need to sleep somewhere unsafe again.

"Tip," Tip offered, shaking Uma's hand. "Daughter of Lucy." That wasn't the way introductions usually went for her, but she could roll with it. "I lived in a car for six months after aliens abducted my mom."

Honestly, all introductions in Fandom should be done that way. Name and a detail about your personal weird.

Maybe leave out the parentage, though.

It made sense back home, where everyone's position in life was dictated by who their parents were. Even on the Isle, she got more deference when people realized she was Ursula's daughter than just another misbegotten henchmen's brat or something.

...So, no real change from this world, they were just more obvious about it in Uma's.

"What are aliens?" she asked, examining more of the food on the table.

That . . . wasn't a question Tip had ever gotten before. Do you mean like from space or people from other countries? she'd gotten, sure, but not what are they.

"People from other planets?" she said. "I mean, technically it means anyone who comes from somewhere else, but most of the time when someone talks about aliens they mean, like, strange creatures from space."

Sorry, Tip. Uma was from a fantasy canon!

"Other planets?" Uma asked. "Like among the stars?"

Did Neverland count? To get there, someone had to head to the first star to the right and then straight on till morning, but no one had ever called them anything different. Maybe Harry would know? Though he was born on the Isle, just like she was, and wouldn't count as an alien anyway.

"Yeah, from the stars," Tip said. That was the second time today someone had put it like that, too. She was going to have to come up with some better ways to explain her Boov friends. "People where I'm from have made up stories about aliens coming and taking over everything for years, but we still weren't super prepared when they actually did."

...Were they also from a fantasy canon?

"We don't really make up stories on the Isle," Uma said. "Not like that anyway. It's either boasts or brags about how evil you were before you were sent to the Isle if you're old, or what you're going to do when the ward finally comes down." Uma snorted. "Most of them won't be any more prepared for that than your people were."

Case in point, Uma was pretty sure she was the only person who'd gotten out when the ward had come down.

Depended on how you classified steampunk!

"Okay, so you're from an Isle, near the Autobahn --" Tip was never going to get that name right. Deliberately, once she learned the whole story. "-- full of evil people? I think that might be a new one, even around here."

"Guess it made sense to have us all be in one place," Uma said with a shrug. And deliberately not fixing Tip's pronunciation because she liked hearing Auradon's name messed up all the time. "Rounded up the ones who were living, resurrected the ones who were dead, and put them all on an island out in the middle of the sea, so even if the wards do come down, we don't have a whole lot of places to go."

There were a few ships, including hers, but hardly enough for the whole island, now with two generations' worth of people.

"Hang on, they brought dead people back just to punish them? Which side is supposed to be evil again?"

Uma shrugged. "It was pretty much the first decree that King Beast and Queen Belle made when they were voted High King and Queen of the United States of Auradon," she said, dryly. "To very popular acclaim. Now all the good little boys and girls in Auradon can sleep safe all snug in their beds, knowing the villains are all locked away on an island and can't hurt anybody ever again."

Except each other. And their kids. But who cared about them?

"So the king and queen of the United States of Oregon banished you all to a ghetto and everybody cheered." Tip sighed. "Yep, people are terrible."

"Well, not me personally," Uma said, trying a handful of small, hard circles with salt on them. "I wasn't born yet."

"Even better! Hereditary punishments. Just throw in some chattel slavery and you'll have the full set."

"Well, I think we're only at two for three," Uma said, giving Tip a tentative grin. "I only left the island for the first time yesterday."
