Bill was overjoyed to see his sentient mistletoe friend again. Tip . . . not so much.
"I'm fifteen," she told it. "And at work. There will be no kissing happening."
She wasn't sure how it managed it, but the mistletoe totally managed to blow her a raspberry before going back to playing tag with her pet robot.

"Hello, Tip. These plants are really annoying."
no subject
That wasn't a terrible idea.
no subject
"I don't like being harrassed by plants."
no subject
Tip nodded, suitably impressed. "Nice."
Bill swooped over to the remaining mistletoe and ushered it away, shooting tiny indignant bubbles in Breq's direction.
"Don't mind him. He doesn't get much company that's his size. I take it you're not into having to kiss random people, either?"
no subject
She added a smile, which might not be a correct reaction.. "I'm not going to ask why."
no subject
"I mean, I'll tell you anyway," Tip said. "It's a weird Christmas tradition. People who are in the same place under this plant are supposed to kiss. Fandom gets pretty . . . insistent throwing holiday traditions at people this time of year."
no subject
It might help that she was good at using it too.

"They don't seem to respond to idle threats," Tip said. "But active ones work. Last year Sparkle stomped on one and yelled at it." It'd been pretty impressive.
no subject
"He seems fond of them, though," she added, looking at Bill.
no subject
"Bill doesn't have a whole lot of intelligent, flying friends his own size," Tip explained. "Also, he doesn't have any lips."
And thus couldn't kiss anyone even if he wanted to.

"That's okay. If I get really annoyed I'll just get my practice sword and whack at it a bit." That had been quite cathartic to do in the park on Friday, after all.
Though one would hope she wouldn't cry while attacking sentient mistletoe.

It wasn't a weapon she had experience with herself, but I was relieved to know that Tip had a way of protect herself. She would have suggested guns though.
no subject
"Just for the last couple months," Tip said. "But yeah. I got tired of feeling like my only option when things got weird around here was my creepy gun."
no subject
Breq would have thought a gun was better. Her troops had once without any effort taken down a huge army of people who for some reason liked swords.
no subject
"My gun erases things. At least sword wounds you can maybe survive."
no subject
Now that was interesting.
"How?"
no subject
"No idea. It's a Boov gun."

More specifically, could it penetrate Radchaai armor? There was no way of knowing that though, and she preferred not to have to grow back an arm or a leg.
She also ought to find out more about the limits of Earth medical technology.
no subject
"Not that we ever discovered. It just erases the armor, too. And . . . I guess it probably depends on the range? It just kind of takes big circular chunks out of anything it's aimed at. You don't even get any light or sound for warning, you just point, shoot, and whatever you were aiming at is . . . gone."
no subject
"And unless you do want to kill someone, perhaps a sword might be better. People can always regrow a limb."
Not here, Breq.
no subject
"Um," said Tip. "I mean . . . no."
no subject
Considering space travel here she wasn't that surprised, actually.
no subject
"Not so much," Tip said. "They're starting to do pretty good with prosthetic replacements, at least."
