Student Council, Lunchtime, Friday

As promised on her announcement, when lunchtime rolled around, Zoe had things all set up for the new(ish) Student Council. There was pizza and salads for caloric balance, sodas, coffee for those who were already addicts, and some kind of variety of cupcakes that had looked especially good at JGOB.

"Hello everyone," she said, with a genuinely friendly smile as they all got settled. "Thank you all for volunteering to be part of the council this year, especially those of you coming back for another year. I'd say we're going to have a nice, peaceful year, but I feel like that might be asking for a lot."

Sorry new folks, hopefully your classes were preparing you for inevitable weirdness.

"We've got two orders of business today. First, we have to elect a president from the seniors, and then we need to talk about how we might want to entertain the people who come to visit during Parents Weekend in a few weeks."

"Hey Breq. I didn't know you signed up for this. Do you have an interest in politics or did it just sound interesting?"

She had quite a deadpan, if nothing else. That could probably be useful in politics.

She also had experience, sort of.

"I'm not sure what subjects are considered of interest to the Student Council," Breq said. "But I'm certain I will find something that interests me. It's good to see you here too."

She liked Tip. She would have made a great officer.

Well, she wasn't super great with hierarchies, but if they got past that, then sure!

"Last year we mostly just planned school dances," Tip admitted. "But it was still fun."

Breq was sure she could make Tip feel at home. Ships were good at that, even if no one noticed.

But she wasn't a ship anymore.

"School dances?" Breq's face betrayed nothing as usual, but she suddenly understood that she had joined a group responsible for arranging celebrations.

"Do we get to choose the music too?"

"We didn't talk a lot about music last year," Tip said. "But I bet we could ask about it this time. If nothing else, you can play what you like on your shift if you sign up to sell tickets."

"I... I'm sure I can be of some help. Selling tickets."

She had hoped for more serious matters, but then these things probably were, and it was a good thing to take part in them.

"It's pretty easy," Tip assured her. Breq's expression, as usual, didn't give her any hints about what that hesitation was about, so she had to guess. "Kinda boring sometimes, but having music should help. It's kind of a fundraiser sort of thing so we have the funds to plan out really good parties."

Oh, Breq thought she could manage, it was just... unexpected.

"What is considered a good party here?" Breq asked. She had seen quite a wide variety of what that could be. And, she reminded herself, they did serve a purpose. People needed to relax and enjoy themselves.

"Anything with lots of food, music, some spiked punch, and glitter." She shrugged. "Glitter is pretty compulsory. Still not sure why."

"I suppose there are stranger things than glitter," Breq noted. "Spiked punch? Does that mean alcohol is not permitted but expected to be accessible anyway?"

"Exactly," Tip said. "The legal drinking age is 21, but only one bar on the island actually tries to enforce it, and I'm pretty sure none of the teachers really care so long as we don't accidentally kill ourselves or each other getting drunk."

"What is considered a party differs a lot from one place to another," Breq said. "I prefer knowing what to expect."

That last part was actually not said seriously, but it was probably hard to tell.

"True. The Boov like to hang out wearing oranges for shoes and playing stickyfish." Tip could almost explain what stickyfish was, now. Almost. "What's a good party where you're from?"

"Oranges for shoes? I haven't heard that before." Breq took a sip of her coffee. "And I've travelled a lot, but where I'm from originally it would either include good tea or conversation, or bad arrak and loud singing. It's a matter of taste."

"Yeah. The Boov are special." To say the least. "So . . . a tea party or karaoke," Tip mused. "Both of those can be fun, but tea parties are usually considered kind of childish or passe, I think. What's arrak? Is that alcohol?"

"Why are tea parties childish?" Breq wasn't offended, but most Radchaai would be if they were told that.

"Arrak is alcohol, yes. What is karaoke?"

It might be a bad thing for everyone else to introduce Breq to karaoke.

"There's this cliche about how little girls are obsessed with tea parties," Tip explained. "And because culture is terrible, anything little girls like can't possibly be fun for everyone." She didn't have a very high opinion of her culture, no. "Karaoke is great! You go out with a bunch of friends to a club or rent a machine or something and it plays the musical background tracks to hit songs with a video screen showing you the lyrics so you can sing it yourself. It's usually really terrible singing, but no one cares because it's just for fun."

"So tea parties are silly." She found this amusing. But more importantly:

"And where are these machines found? Perhaps we can have one at the party."

Breq's face might still be quite expressionless, but she truly liked this idea.

"The internet," Tip suggested. "Or I bet there's a party store or something we could rent one at. You can sing at Caritas, too -- that's one of the bars -- but it's with live band of zombies. Dead band of zombies? Band of zombies that plays while you sing."

"I'm not sure I know what zombies are," Breq are. "But perhaps they can be invited? Or we can find one of these machines."

People should like singing. And Breq had no interest in dancing or spiked punch.

"Reanimated dead people," Tip explained. "Sure. You should suggest it for Homecoming, maybe. That's the first big party of the year. It could be fun to mix things up."

Breq trusted Tip to know the right occasion for karaoke. "I'll think about it."

She would also look into how to find one of those machines.

"Reanimated dead people?" That felt a little uncomfortable. Ancillaries were referred to as corpse soldiers by many non-Radchaai, which wasn't true of course. None of her bodies had ever been dead. They had to be alive and conscious.

"Gross, right?" Tip said, once again having to guess at what Breq was getting at. "They're, like, half-rotted and everything. But in the movies they always want to kill and eat people, and these don't. They're just . . . dead and also active musicians."

"Oh! So those are zombies. They appeared in an entertainment, trying to eat people, and I wasn't sure what they were supposed to be."

"As long as they just play music." Breq actually made an effort to smile here.

"We could go check them out sometime if you like," Tip offered. "Caritas doesn't check your ID to see if you're old enough to drink, so anyone can go in."
