Sam looked slightly more comfortable up here today, and he felt a little better too as he smiled out at the students. "Hey, so before we start diving into more specific topics, I wanted to make sure we talked about consent."
"So, the topic of sexual consent can be kind of complicated and simple at the same time. Ultimately, if someone doesn't want to do a thing with you, you shouldn't make them do the thing. It doesn't matter if you've just met, or you've been dating for a while, or even if you're married. Not all that long ago, people argued that wives couldn't say no to their husbands if they wanted sex, because marrying someone meant they had automatic consent. Honestly, there are still people and cultures that feel that way, but they're in an increasing minority as more and more people talk about this stuff publicly.
"Consent also isn't just about sex. If you don't like to be touched or hugged, you have the right not to be touched. If you're big on physical contact, ask before you go in for that hug or that kiss and make sure it's okay. I know this is kind of a big and uncomfortable topic, so I thought we could have a discussion if there's anything about consent you're still questioning, or want the opinion of others on."

"So I was reading about the Secretary of Education and her new modifications to Title IX and how someone's sexual history should be allowed to be brought in as evidence in a case where consent is being contested, so I guess my question is why does she get the right to say that?" Paris demanded.
