The Healing Power of Crystals, Wednesday
The teacher wasn't in the classroom when class started. No, he was wandering in about five minutes later, loaded down with some convention swag.
Some might have had a little blood on it. You know. From the usual convention... cage matches.
Okay, he stole all of it. Literally all of it.
"Oh yeah, I have a class today. Sorry, I don't care about it." That was blunt. "Just bein' honest here. You know, cards on the table. Though I need to set radio straight on me wanting you kids to take this less seriously. If you're good maybe we can have a party at the end of it. If you're bad... I'm gonna pelt you with crystals. Mmkay?"
He nodded like the pact was sealed.
"Okay, I've got some slightly damaged convention exclusives to sell on E-Bay. You all stay frosty."
Oh yeah, he was gonna win teacher of the year for sure now.

Listen to the... Deal?
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"I could be in the library reading that book about actual magic crystals," she muttered. "The one with kissing."
Not that she cared about kissing, but anything from the fantasy romance section was a fascinating insight about humanity's weird misconceptions about the power of gemstones.
And, fine, kissing.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
Summer, who did care about kissing, like, probably too much, simply could not let that one slide if she could help it.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"Go read?" Peridot paused, and then, feeling the need to clarify, added, "A book."
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
Come on, how could she not tease you right now, Peridot? She was physically incapable of not trying to expand on this to the best of her ability.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
Peridot hesitated for a moment, and then ventured, "Do you not understand what kissing is?"
She was sometimes frighteningly incapable of understanding the nuances of human teasing, Summer. Brace yourself.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
And that earned Peridot a total do you even know who you're talking to? look that Peridot would very likely not be able to decipher as such.
"Do I not understand what kissing is? Come on. Of course I do. I was not, however, informed of the fact that there would be magical crystal books that included it. I mean, granted, there's a lot of book about a lot of thing that including kissing you wouldn't expect, but I guess the real kicker here is that, no offense, I wasn't expecting you to be reading them."
And that was where this whole thing got interesting.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"It was a book in the library about magical crystals," Peridot hedged, frowning thoughtfully. "Why wouldn't I be reading it?"
She'd been hoping it would be a little bit like Gem society, to help with that chewing homesick feeling she had but couldn't quite put a finger on. It hadn't been, but it had been sufficiently distracting anyway.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"Okay," said Summer, brows arched speculatively, "sooooo is the fact that it's about magical crystals the one and only reason you're reading it?"
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"There are also some fascinating if frustrating politics involved," Peridot offered.
Possibly missing the entire point that Summer was angling at, here.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
And if that didn't do it, then maybe Summer might just let it go in a wave of disappointment. Maybe.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"No," she allowed. "I suppose I didn't."
And the books were very much about kissing, at times. And, ah, more than that.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
And then kind of paused.
"I'm sort of just discovering romance."
Like, as a concept.
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
And it that one little sound, accompanied by the soft patter of lightly clapped hands, was the true indicator of just how deprived of Girl Talk Summer had been since she started coming here. Sure, she still furiously texted her friends back home, but it wasn't the same as some face-to-face gab time to talk about kissing and boys or...crystals...or...ruggedly shaped rocks or whatever the case may be.
"That is so great, Peridot," she gushed. "If you have any questions, seriously, don't hesitate to ask me, I'll be happy to help, especially since, you know, some of those books have some really weird ideas. It's good to know fact from fiction, especially if it's written by a dude. Some of those male authors don't seem to have ever even seen a woman before. I have to admit, I'm not really...big on reading? But I can make exceptions, and this sounds really....really interesting, if you want to let me borrow it when your finished. Is it a series? If you're already into it, maybe I can start and try to catch up!"
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"It's a series," she shared, since that seemed like a good place to start. "The Gems in it are nothing like anything I'm familiar with, they're more a source of power for the humans and other assorted organic beings that wear them. But it's still intriguing..."
She cleared her throat a little, and then blushed.
"I wouldn't know what's accurate when it comes to the... romance... and what isn't, of course."
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"And that's where I can come in," she said. "I can maybe pick up a copy of the first book on my way to coffee shop. It probably won't take me too long if I actually try. And then maybe I can see all this kissing that's got you so intrigued."
And, as a concession, she waved a hand and added, "And the politics, too, of course."
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"Of course," Peridot said, though she was perking up a little at the idea. "We can talk about the book's contents together, perhaps. You can explain to me what you found unlikely?"
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"Exactly!" said Summer happily, though she had to bite her lip a little because, oh man, she was probably going to enjoy this way too much and poor Peridot would just be confused and probably think she was crazy, but whatever. She knew humans were weird to Peridot, and she felt perfectly fine with either propegating that idea or stumbling into the happy accident of a better understanding.
Plus, you know. Girl talk. Kind of. Close enough, anyway.
"And you can also tell me what's different about these crystals and Gems," she suggested. "We'll both be learning something."
Re: Listen to the... Deal?
Or so educated. Or, most likely, some mix of the two.
"Hey, yeah! I haven't had a chance to teach anyone here very much about Gems and Homeworld. It's been me doing all of the learning. And this book has it all wrong."
Though, she supposed, they weren't aiming to write about Gems. Just people with powers and jewels.

Re: Listen to the... Deal?
"Ketchup," Summer reasoned. "It was probably just...ketchup, right?"
It was...weird that blood seemed more plausible, actually, wasn't it?

...
"And a lot of..."
were those keychains?
