Political Campaigning [Tuesday, March 21, 4th period]

Josh was sitting behind his desk for all the world like he hadn't been gone for almost a month.

He gave the Campaigning class a welcoming grin when they arrived.

"Hey all," he said, checking his syllabus. "I think we're supposed to be talking about political consultants and other people you hire. It's pretty easy. Hire Bruno Gianelli. It'll cost your soul, but he's a steal at that kind of price."

He kicked his feet onto his desk. "What'd I miss?" He looked around the room. "And, um, Rory--how many days until the election?"

Jake signed in

Jake blinked when he realized it was Josh, not Angel, Rory or Logan in front of the class. "...Wow. You came back."

Angel signed in. He looked at Josh warily but he had plenty of things to be wary about.

His chair? As far away from everyone in class as it was possible to be while still being in the room.

Josh grinned. "I couldn't turn down the opportunity to warp young minds for low pay, Donna." He scrubbed his hands through his hair. "Turns out trying to negotiate peace in the Middle East is just as hard as it looks." He raised an eyebrow. "Did you know they still hate each other? President Bartlet likes to check every couple of years."

He sighed. "Talk about a waste of a month."

Josh raised an eyebrow at Angel's choice of seating in the classroom. Apparently he'd missed a lot.

"Dad does pretty good business down there," Jake noted. "But he only negotiates fees, really."

Elizabeth signs in, and smiles at Josh. "Good to see you back, Professor."

"It's good to be back, Elizabeth," Josh replied. "Did I miss anything interesting?"

He smiled. "Who'd they find to sub for me?"

Elizabeth thought for a moment. "Angel covered a couple of sessions, and he got us a vampire for a guest speaker," she began. "Logan showed us a movie one class, and we had Rory last Thursday."

Josh leaned forward. "You got to listen to an undead American? What was it like? Did he talk about the special interests of his continuency or something?"

"Negotiates fees, huh," Josh said. "What kind of business?"

Elizabeth hesitated. "Mostly he talked about pyramids. As in fund-raising ones, not the ones in Egypt. Although the latter might have been more interesting. Although it was obviously quickly adapted from pyramid motivation for an audience of the undead, where their goals wouldn't be considered fund raising capital for a political campaign."

"Courier. Dad's boss of International Infonet... which probably doesn't exist in your world, huh?"

Josh threw back his head and laughed until tears came. "You got a talk from an undead guy with a pyramid scheme? I love this place."

"Not so much, no," Josh said. "Is it information sharing kind of stuff? I can see how that would be big in the Middle East."

Elizabeth giggled. "We did. I'm not sure if Angel's been allowed near the internet since then!"

"Hee," Josh said, wiping his eyes. "I'm guessing the pyramid guy wasn't exactly selling time shares in Boca--can't see his people being into that sort of thing."

He glanced over at Angel, eyes twinkling. "But these sorts of mistakes happen, I'm sure. Just not, you know, to me."

"Somewhere with a little less sun for them, yes," Elizabeth agreed, grinning.

"No. You just have a secret plan to fight inflation," she said, looking completely innocent.

Josh went red to his ears. "Yes. Yes, I do. So secret that I can't share it with anyone even now."

He stared at the ceiling. "Yes. That's my story, and I'm feeling pretty confident about it."

Logan signed in. He risked a wary glance in Angel's direction.

"I can see why," Elizabeth bit her lip trying not giggle.
