Advanced Criminal Justice, Class 19, Period 1, 03.21.06

[OOC: Yay! Project! A more detailed OOC explanation of the project will be coming late this afternoon. Just work on developing your own theory based on cartoons for now. Groups announced in OCD threads. Metaphor and EC ~~will be posted later as well~~ are finally up. Class Info Post.]

The Tick was at the front of the room as always. Lockheed was givig hopeful glances to Cameron from his normal book shelf.

"Hello, students! Today you will be starting on your big project for the semester. It's actually pretty simple. I'll split you into groups of two. Each group will figure out a theory - any theory - about how Justice works. Take Parker's Darwinist view of Justice, for example (well, don't take it, it's hers). Once you have a theory worked out, you'll be using any of these ~~cartoons~~ documentaries on my desk to showcase the theory."

"Pending Professor Mac's approval ~~which I totally forgot to get beforehand, oops~~, I'd like to use the Danger Shop to showcase these theories at life size and see if they hold true. Your theories and how they apply to the documentaries are due two weeks from today."

"This project is all about teaming up with someone and compromising on your views of Justice, so get into your groups and get to talking!"

"This weeks metaphor is lightbulbs. And this week's extra credit is to devise a battlecry for your project partner!"

"Dude, you already know how to smurf! That's just smurfy!" He grins.

"The smurfs are these like tiny blue people," he holds his index and thumb apart to show Archie how small exactly they are, "and they live all together in this village. "They all basically wear the same white trousers and hat, except for Papa Smurf who gets a red outfit and Smurfette who is like the only girl in the village and she gets to wear a dress. And then you've got the different smurfs who get named by their personality. You've got Brainy, who's a bit of a know-it-all, Grouchy, Jokey, Cook Smurf, Poet Smurf, Handy, Hefty, etc. They're all basically good little smurfs and they live in a mushroom village and get to fight evil that usually comes in the shape of Gargamel who wants to eath them all."

Archie's face just gets more and more comically incredulous throughout this entire explanation. "These mushrooms of theirs wouldn't happen to be the funny drugged sort, would they?"

"I don't think so, they're hallow inside and they look like real houses," Cameron replies. "They even got chimneys."

"Must be portobellos, then," mutters Archie, rubbing his temples. He already feels a headache coming on. "Now, I'm assuming this Gargamel is much bigger than they are?"

"Oh yeah, Gargamel is a human and a bit of an asshole too. He's a wizard and because the smurfs are so special, he wants to use them in all sorts of brews he's making. And he's got a cat, Azrael, who helps him catch them. Not that it ever works."

"He sounds a great deal like that Wile E.Coyote character we learned about last semester," Archie observes. "So, these Smurfs all wear the same outfits and act in conjunction to thwart Gargamel's evil plans? I think we may have the beginnings of a theory here. Does wearing a uniform help agents of justice attune themselves to one another?"

"I guess it's easy to recognise each other like that, but then all the smurfs are blue so that's a giveaway too. Maybe it's to create a sense of unity? That's pretty much what uniforms are for, no? To set you apart from others and to make you feel one with the people you fight with. It's just the leaders that stand out," he paused for a moment, trying to come up with more. "And then usually in cartoons it so happens that the evil guys get to wear ugly clothes or are mostly dressed in black."

Archie is not making a point of looking at Cameron's black uniform. At all. But then, he's not a cartoon.

"That's the theory in the Royal Navy, at least," he says. "To distinguish yourselves from the enemy and establish a sense of unity among comrades. They're also good for the ego; we know we look damned Smurfing smart in them."

"Ah yeah, own uniform first and all that." Cameron frowned and leaned forward. "Does my uniform look smurf to you? Because the girls seem to think so but... Does it look gay?"

Archie raises an eyebrow. "Is that a problem? It's quite smurfing, if you ask me."

Quite a flexible word, "Smurf." That's very convenient.

"I don't know, if it's to attract chicks then it's probably bad if it makes you look gay," Cameron shrugs.

"Believe me," drawls Archie, "I've never known that to stop anyone sufficiently attracted to a uniform."

"I guess not," Cameorn agrees and tries to steer his mind away from Jaye's reaction this morning because that's just wrong right now. "Uh, so Justice and uniforms..."

"The intrigue wears off after a while though," notes Archie. "Hardly just, if you ask me."

"It does?" Cameron got bummed a bit. "Maybe it's a matter of wearing it in small measures?"

"Oh, certainly, if that's an option for you. Those of us who wear a uniform as a matter of duty, and not just on a whim, don't quite have that liberty."

"No, I guess not." Cameron says, trying not to get annoyed. "I'll find that out in a couple of years."

Archie waves a hand carelessly. "But we're getting off track. For people outside the justice system, does the sight of an officer of justice in uniform affect their perception of the system, do you think?"

Cameron narrows his eyes. "Depends, if the uniform is good enough they might think they're really an officer and behave just because they note their presence."

Archie nods. "How much of it is the uniform, though, and how much is the way the person in uniform carries himself? Or herself? And how much is the reputation of the system?"

"I'm sure we can find footage of Bugs trying to play police," Cameron suggests. "I'm thinking it's a combination of all really."

"What isn't there footage of that rabbit trying to do?"

"Crossdr- No wait, I'm sure he probably ended up playing a nanny before. He's lived a fully rabbity life?"

"And again, off the subject. If I'm remembering correctly, all the records we've seen of Bugs Bunny in a uniform by and large makes a mockery of the justice system, except in those odd cases where his actions inadvertently work for justice. Perhaps we should disprove that uniform theory instead."

"He mocks it, but Elmer usually shows respect towards him because of it," Cameron points out.
