Much like last week, Cara's class were meeting in the salle, and any latecomers had dye balloons lobbed at them, unlike last week, there were training dummies set up in a row, as well as protective hand-gear.

"You weren't terrible," she began. "But if you only learn one thing from this class it'll be to throw an acceptable punch, so today we're going with useful but boring and drilling.

"I could come up with a whole speech about discipline, hard-work, and and muscle memory, but it comes down to this, if you freeze, you're dead, if you overthink, you're dead, if you're sloppy you're dead, actually I could go on all day, but those are the main three it's supposed to help with.

"It goes like this, I'll call out a number and you'll throw the corresponding punch, like this." Counting off, Cara demonstrated a series of four blows to the dummy's body, including a vicious knee to the its groin (sorry, not sorry, Jason) on four. "And since we're stating simple, I won't even break sequence until I'm sure you're ready for it." Pretty generous of her if you wanted her opinion.

"In any case, today I want you to go for technique, not speed or power, those'll come once you've got the first, and if anyone wanted a more exciting class today, just remember, I could have brought out the inflatable clowns." Be glad she hadn't, they were really creepy.

Or wince sympathetically.

So, you know, last week Jason had noticed that he was in fact the only guy in the class, but today was the day that that fact really sank in.

One punch, two punch, three punch, kick.

Yeah, okay, this was pretty similar to the pit, at least, except with training dummies instead of simulated rock monsters. Oh well.

It took a while, mostly because at first he was focusing on not actually destroying school equipment by accident, but Jason eventually found a good rhythm with the drill.

Peebee went through the drill a couple of times, but she'd covered this sort of thing in her lessons back home and got bored with it fairly quickly.

Sigh, Peebee.

About halfway through the class, Cara called a halt. "Since, you're not all beginners, I have another exercise for anyone who thinks they have what we've been working on down. Anyone who feels confident come here and pair up, anyone who doesn't can either keep drilling or watch."

She brought out several sets of training mitts. "One of you is going keep doing the drill, the other is going to attempt to catch each blow on these. Since your partner is going to do the drill and not try to hit you rather than the mitt, this should be doable if you've actually got the drill down. Halfway through our remaining time, you'll swap roles."

Pair up and realise you've made a terrible mistake.

You know what? Sure, why not? Jason looked around to see who would be willing to partner up.

Cassandra was there, eyeing the dummies with something akin to envy.

She missed hitting them. She hadn't done that in at least three hours.

A feeling Cara knew only too well.

"Nothing's stopping you joining in," she said when her circuit of the room brought her near Cassandra. "I'm the one who has the supervise."

"But I am also supposed to be an authority figure of sorts, no?" Cassandra said.

"You do that by being better than them." Cara believed in your ability to punch ~~bears~~ the best, Cass. "Call it being an example."

Cassandra considered it.

"True," she said. "I suppose I will have to go and set that example."

By stepping forward and punching that dummy like it was a bear, yes.
