Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather held out nicely during the day, and while that meant some of the tables were right out in the warm sun, others had been carefully placed under some shade, and the gentle breeze had cleared at least a little of the glitter up.

It wasn't totally gone, of course. That wouldn't be any fun!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Hannibal noticed the new face and the distinct lack of comfort, and made his way over with a pack of sandwiches and very good coffee.

"Hello," he called as he approached, and gave her a small bow. "Welcome to Fandom."

She glanced up, looking him up and down more out of habit than suspicion. "Hello. And thank you."

Anne smiled. "Are you the welcoming committee?"

"One of them, perhaps," Hannibal answered, smiling back. "You'll have met someone who's been assigned to let you know about this place, which is the official welcome. I merely thought you looked as though you could use a bit more."

He held out his hand. "Doctor Hannibal Lecter. Pleased to meet you."

Anne chuckled, shifting her bag more securely onto her shoulder before taking his hand. "Anne Mayers. Thanks for the welcome, Doctor."

"I guess I do sort of stick out, huh?" The long-sleeved coat probably didn't help her blend in in this weather, or the fact that the left sleeve was hanging loose with nothing in it.

Well, neither was particularly unusual - Hannibal's own husband was wearing a jacket just as heavy and had even more missing parts - but they did make her noteworthy.

He smiled. "It's a small enough island that anybody new does, I'm afraid. Can I offer you a sandwich or some coffee?"

"Can't say no to hospitality like that," Anne chuckled, reaching out for the coffee first.

"So, what kind of doctor are you?" she asked. "As a friend of mine used to ask: are you the kind that helps people, or the other kind?"

Hannibal poured her some coffee while he pretended to think about it. "The answer to that, I believe, would be 'yes'."

He smiled and handed her the cup. "I have both degrees. I have been a surgeon, and am currently a psychiatrist, when I'm not teaching food-related classes at this school."

"All that doctoring, and a chef too?" Anne shook her head as she took the coffee. "I suddenly feel very underqualified."

Hannibal chuckled. "I started young. And I'm an anomaly, I assure you. Tell me about yourself, then - what brings you to Fandom?"

"Looking for a change in scenery, mostly." She looked around the picnic. "And this place already feels a lot different than home."

"This place is very different from most," Hannibal answered. "Where is home?"

Her eyes unfocused, and she looked hesitant for a moment before shrugging away the memories. "Well, I've moved around a lot, but I still generally tell people I'm from Arin."

Hannibal shook his head. "I'm not familiar with it, I'm afraid. Is that your city, your country, or your world?"

"Planet," Anne answered. "And, to be honest? It's kind of a relief you're not familiar with it. One of the reasons I came out here was to get away from things."

"In that case, you may be in luck," Hannibal said. "I can't guarantee that nobody here will know of it, but I've certainly never heard anyone else say they're from there. And the current planet hasn't yet achieved space flight, so unless they come through portals, you're unlikely to be bothered by anybody from back home."

"That last part I was aware of. It was part of what brought me here."

"Like I said, getting away from things is part of my motivation."

"And the rest?" Hannibal asked. "If you don't mind my asking."

"Nothing wrong with a little curiosity." She smiled.

"Part of it was just the need for a vacation, I suppose." She laughed. "Though I think most people wouldn't consider teaching a bunch of teenagers to be much of a vacation."

But that was just a matter of perspective.

"That depends upon where you're coming from, and what you enjoy," Hannibal said. "And upon the teenagers, I suppose," he added. "What are you teaching?"

"Well, here's hoping that I get lucky with the students, then."

She grinned.

"And I'm teaching a course on non-violent conflict resolution."

Hannibal shook his head ruefully. "Something many more people could stand to learn. I wish you luck with it as well as with your students."

"Thanks." She grinned. "I'll probably need it." Because, you know, teenagers.
