Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

The weather held out nicely during the day, and while that meant some of the tables were right out in the warm sun, others had been carefully placed under some shade, and the gentle breeze had cleared at least a little of the glitter up.

It wasn't totally gone, of course. That wouldn't be any fun!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

It was even better when it was used on the bad guys.

"Why thank you," Magnus said, brightening right on up. "You know, most people don't go for the classics and it's a real shame."

Hey now, sometimes bad guys made the best good guys.

Or something.

"You'll find at least a few 'round here who are more used to 'hail' than 'hi'," Eliot observed. "I just kinda figured you were from one of those worlds."

Now he was wondering if you were just a giant nerd, Magnus.

He was both, okay? He was both.

"I think I am," Magnus replied, looking around. "I am actually trying to find a way to get back there before I need to start teaching here. Prior engagements, you know?"

The world ending. That sort of thing.

Good luck with that.

"Yeah. . . . You can try Portalocity, but I'd say don't hold your breath. If Fandom decided you're teachin' here, you're not likely to manage to back out."

Fandom was stubborn that way.

"I'm Eliot, by the way. Finally managed to get myself a session off after three years of getting assigned classes whether I wanted to teach 'em or not."

Magnus' shoulders slumped a little, but he recovered admirably. "Magnus," he replied. "Magnus Burnsides. So, the island is... cursed?"

If there was a god damn Grand Relic here, he was gonna pop the fuck off.

"Maybe," Eliot said with a shrug. "Pretty sure it's more that it's just magic. And possessive."

"That sounds a lot like a curse." From his vast experience with the magics. "Are there any... wizards around who can help get me back home? I didn't leave willingly and I'm pretty sure people are in danger there now."

It was hard to remember what he'd been so clear about as a ghost-possessing-a-mannequin.

"Dunno, maybe? Plenty of magic users around, but dunno how many of 'em are teleporters or anything. What kind of situation did you leave your friends in?"

"Well, I was attacked by a lot of these invisible--" Were they invisible? He could have sworn he saw them before. "--things. And it looked a little bad."

"Uh . . . huh." Invisible things. Well, this guy was going to fit in just fine. "That kind of thing happen a lot where you're from?"

"No, generally I can see the things I'm fighting!"

He said it so earnestly too.

". . . You know, you can train for fighting things blind."

Because what Magnus really needed now was a lesson in how to be better prepared as a fighter. Good job, Eliot.

Yesss, yesss. Tell him more about training in the ways of combat, Eliot.

Magnus went still and intent like a pointer dog at that. "I never thought about that. Maybe that's what I'll so while I try to get back there! Can't be harder than Rogue training."

Well, he was talking to Eliot "Everything's a Teaching Moment" Spencer, here.

"Always good to keep busy," he said. "I could give you a few pointers sometime if you want."

"That'd be great! I'm always up for a good fight," Magnus replied cheerfully.

"And I ain't had a new sparring partner in ages." It was always more fun when you weren't intimately familiar with the other person's fighting style. More of a challenge. "Hey, what's this place got you signed up to teach, anyway?"

This could only end in gleeful destruction of something in the process.

"Woodworking! Which I'm not sure many kids will be interested in and that's a shame. It's a really great skill to have."

Hey, so long as it was cheerful!

"You might be surprised. I did Shop last fall and had a fair number of kids interested in building and making stuff."

"Really? Then maybe it'll be great!"

It would be three kids and end in tears.

Yeah, but that was, like, half the classes this session.

"Could be. Guess you'll have to stick around a bit and find out."

Yeah, but this one would end in the box. Maybe. Who knew for certain?

"Unless I get home before then. But I'll really try to come back because I hate not finishing a job."

"Like the one where you got attacked by invisible things."

"Exactly." See, you got him, Eliot.

"And — what exactly was the job you were doin' there?"

"I was." Magnus paused, really having to focus on his words here. "Working for an organization that was... destroying certain dangerous objects."

He was suspicious about the 'destroying' part actually happening now, though.
