Today's class was held in the Danger Shop, with dozens of beings (male, female, and none-of-your-business) wandering around in business attire, drinking from wine glasses and eating needlessly fussy appetizers. "Welcome to a diplomatic reception," Anakin said with a little sigh. "The most tedious places on any given planet."

"If you don't know how to comport yourself," said Obi-Wan. (Who was lying. He found them tedious, too.) "But comporting one's self can be... something of a trial, yes."

"The alcohol that helps to make them less horrible can lead to other problems: talking out of turn, telling someone what you really think, getting sick in someone important's potted plant...so you will not be allowed to have alcohol here," Anakin said. "The guests you will interact with...do not have that restriction."

So now you also have to talk to potentially drunk people! Yay, you!

Tip had dealt with (she was sure) some of the stupidest beings alive. None of these folks even had a parrot. She was sure she would be able to handle this just fine.

Bill buzzed worriedly by her ear. He was . . . not sure about that. At all.

A drunken human-presenting male bumped into her, splashing whatever he was drinking down his hand. "Dammit," he muttered. "Watch where you're going!"

Not that it had been her fault, but details.

"Of course you were," he insisted, wobbling slightly on his feet. "Do you know who I am?"

"If you were worth knowing, I would know already," the man sniffed.

"You must live in a very narrow little world then," Tip said. "Where you never ever get to meet anyone new and worthwhile."

It was very sad for him.

Tip hadn't bumped into him, either.

Yeah, Tip remembered that part, too. "Gee, I was just thinking the same thing."

She was clearly awesome at this diplomacy thing.

The man sniffed again. "I shall seek more refiiined company. And another drink."

He really didn't need another drink. At all.

Isabela had a flask, because nothing made her decide to sneak a drink quicker than being told to stay sober to avoid ruining the party.

Though it wasn't really sneaking if you didn't make any attempt to hide what you were doing.

"Canape?" a waiter asked her, thrusting a plate of...something...in front of her.

Isabela took another swig from her flask. "Sure. Thanks."

Even if she wasn't sure it was edible, it'd give her an excuse to ignore anyone obnoxious.

"Thanks," the waiter said. "Most people are avoiding the pickled kidneys tonight for some reason."

"Can't expect snobs to go for the peasant food," Isabela said as she shrugged and took another canape. "More for me then."

Ahsoka already knew how to behave at these things...though that was almost entirely thanks to Padme (and Riyo) rather than Anakin.

Maybe something would explode, explosions usually happened around Anakin, Obi-Wan, and diplomatic functions.

She could not prove that Anakin set off explosions to get out of receptions! Probably!

...more than twice?

"So what brings you to this delightful slice of the universe?" A Bothan slurred at her.

Ahsoka would be more inclined to believe he wasn't responsible if he didn't look so happy when the explosions started.

Of course, she was also currently trying to remember everything she'd ever been taught about improvised ordinance.

She inclined her head towards Anakin. "I'm accompanying Master Skywalker," she said, hoping to palm the Bothan off on him. "He believes it's an educational experience." It wasn't even a lie.

"What's educational about it?" the Bothan asked. "I'd sooner watch paint dry."

"That's what I'd like to know," Ahsoka muttered below her breath, resisting the urge to try to mind trick the fake Bothan into actually going to watch paint dry.

"The will of the Force reveals itself in time," she said so the Bothan could hear, mimicking Anakin mimicking Obi-Wan.

"How very wise," the Bothan agreed, nodding solemnly. "Though I seldom see that happening at a reception."

Really, Peridot... had no idea what to do in a situation like this. Diplomacy was best left to higher-ranking Gems. Sapphires, maybe. She...

She was a Peridot. And so she was going to stand around, squinting as she inspected the room and the occupants of it, mostly just hoping that nobody would notice her down there.

"Hello," an older woman said, smiling down at her. "What brought you here?"

Peridot peered up... and up... at the woman who had approached her, and then, kind of awkwardly, pointed at herself in question.

"Me? I'm supposed to be here learning how to be... diplomatic."

That word still felt weird on her tongue.

"It's much easier to be diplomatic when you've had a glass of wine, dear," she counseled.

"What's wine?"

"What's wine? Oh, lamb, have you come to a diplomatic function without knowing how to drink? You're doomed!"

"I don't know how to eat, either," Peridot offered. "Food and drink are unnecessary materials that my body doesn't require in order to function."

She paused a moment, and then added, "How doomed?"

"Fairly doomed if you can't hide behind a plate of food or a glass of something to drink," she replied. "They're classic avoidance techniques."

"What if I get something to hide behind, but don't put it into my mouth?"

"That could work," the lady said. "Most of the beings here are astoundingly self-centered and wouldn't notice if you're not really eating or drinking."

There was a long pause for consideration, and then Peridot wondered, "But what do I do if they do notice?"

"Pretend to see someone across the way from you that you have to talk to," the lady said, "and run away. Diplomatically."

"Oh, I can do that!"

Lady, you were making Peridot far too excited to just stand around looking super interested in food that was never going to make it into her mouth.

"I'll be so diplomatic!"
