Once again, Zhaan was carefully attired. This time in pale blue and tweed. The bunny slippers, however, were still on her feet.

"Good afternoon." She cast a glance around the class and smiled, "Thank you all for ~~I hope~~ bringing your plants with you, as requested. I trust you spoke with them, during the intervening day.

"There are many sides of thought regarding interaction with growing plants. Some--those rooted in logic--claim it does nothing save waste your own energy. Others believe that it causes the plants to flourish, while others hypothesize that the nature of emotion, the words, even the exact way phrases are said cause minute changes in a plant's physical structure." She paused, and absently made a note before continuing, "There is scientific proof that sound waves cause changes in every physical structure--mostly at the microscopic level. And, even humans are affected by sound. Loud ones, soft ones--is it an angry sound or a happy sound, these influence how the human body reacts. The same can be said of plants."

Dropping the lecturing tone, Zhaan tilted her head, "Your assignment for the next week is to continue as you've begun: care for your plant."

Wriggling her toes in her slippers, she smiled. "Any questions?"

Walter, as noted before, has a pot with a rather combative, bright blue plant in it. Walter's violent (http://www.geocities.com/eribella/plants.html) hasn't had time to flower yet, but the little clubs have formed and it tries to hit anything that strays too near.

"Should I be trying to make it calm down? Or trying to make it madder, since violents are supposed to be, well, violent?"

Rather intrigued by the strange-looking plant (hey, even if you've been all over the galaxy, there's still stuff you haven't seen), Zhaan came to inspect it without touching. She considered, "It's hard to fight against what nature intended."

"So I could... tell it adventure stories?" Walter was grasping at straws.

"You could." She considered, "Think of the plant as a very small child. Just inspecting the world and often finding wonder in the little things. A dustball, a piece of twine... Stories about spaceships and flying muppets..."

Walter shook his head befuddled amusement. "I have a bot that needs similar treatment. I suppose I'll visit the library for a storybook."

Attempting to suppress her grin, Zhaan replied, "Something with pictures in it might be light enough, and still engaging." If Zhaan knew human books, she might have suggested Curious George.

This almost certainly was not what Arthur was sending him to Fandom to learn.

All the more reason to have fun with it. "Thanks, Professor. I'll do that."

Inclining her head, Zhaan smiled, "You're welcome."

Inspecting Pippi's plants wih approval, Zhaan smiled, "They look... interesting." Especially the tank. That was something she hadn't seen before, and the strange plants gave her the sensation of being not quite plants. Or possibly, that was just their shape. She was reminded, oddly, of Br'nee's garden. Somehow, she doubted he'd talked to his plants, though.

"Thank you." said Pippi.

"I sing to them. Mostly songs I make up and sea chanties..."

For a moment, Zhaan considered what would happen to young delvians who wanted to sail the high seas, then shook her head to dispell the fancy. "Singing is also good in stimulating plants."

"They do seem to like it." Pippi nodded.

Her professional curiosity getting the better of her, Zhaan asked, "What properties do they have? Medicinal, or purely ornamental?"

"Sea chanties? They're not Medicinal as far as I know. But sailors use them to pass the time during repetative tasks, like hauling up sails, swabbing the deck, or pumping buildge."

Distracted, and amused at her own silliness at being non-specific, Zhaan replied, "In a way, it's another example of sound providing a change in the environment. And livening things up, I'd imagine."

"Yes," agreed Pippi, "I would guess sounds are as veried as light."

"I've been talking to my plant a lot," Sharon said brightly, showing it off. It might have looked a little green.

Arriving at Sharon's side, Zhaan inspected the plant, gently stroking a hand over it. "It appears... well."

Grinning, Sharon nodded, "I think talking and telling it about the colonies and my homework really helped!"

Surprised to find one of the plant fronds clinging to her finger, Zhaan paused to free it, and forgot to answer Sharon's comment.

~~You said you weren't discussing that!~~

Wondering why the teacher was poking her plant, Sharon almost frowned. "It's ok, isn't it?"

"It seems fine." Zhaan replied, making a mental note not to ever let Sharon read her stories.
