Don't Be a Hero [Thursday, 2nd Period]

Class was being held in an ordinary classroom today, with Cara up the front of the room, and unlike last week she did not look particularly happy. Most likely entirely because of last week.

"So, by now you should have figured out that the class could very well be called don't be a suicidal moron," she began with all her usual tact. "Which you'd think would be easy enough, but that doesn't account for the ingenuity of fools. They will always, always have a reason why they have to do the thing regardless of how blindingly obvious a bad idea that is." Richard.

"So today you're going to find a partner, one of you will think up the most stupid thing a person could do, something so clearly clearly and utterly wrong-headed that there is no way anyone could ever decide to do it, and the other will find a way to explain why they, in particular, need to do it, and try to argue each other around. Then swap over."

Ada was very good at Not Doing The Thing if it was a dangerous idea. Or involved water.

Ada was NOT very good at Not Doing The Thing if it was for fun.

Hyacinthe had not yet seen Phedre attempt to sleep her way through every diplomatic problem under the sun, so he sadly had only mundane ideas about what stupid things people could get up to.

"I want to go speak openly and honestly with the other party and I expect them to do the same with me," he replied promptly.

"Some people are liars, an' you shouldn't ever 'expect' somethin' outta someone, b'cause you don't have th' right t' dictate their behaviour," the carnie informed him cheerfully. "So sure, go be honest, an' get taken for a sucker."

ADA. MEAN.

"But if I don't approach with honesty, why should anyone else?" Hyacinthe said with wide eyes. "I need to be the first example of how to behave! Show that integrity and kindness can withstand anything."

Don't laugh don't laugh don't laugh, and Ada bit at her lower lip to try and contain her amusement.

"Why should anyone do anything?" She said with a shrug. "Not because other people do, but b'cause they want to. You can lead a horse t' water but you can't make it drink, an' people ain't much different. Expecting someone t' do something b'cause you would is short-sighted."

"B'sides, you can be honest without bein' totally open about everything. There's such a thing as too much information."

"Even if honesty can't compel someone to behave the same way, it can still encourage it," Hyacinthe said staunchly. "Lying only encourages more lying. And mistrust. And if we haven't the moral high ground, we've not anything at all!"

Except possibly strategy, tactics, equipment, training, funding...
