How To Shoot Straight, Monday

"Right," Atton said.

They were standing in a classroom. A regular, nice, simple classroom that wasn't going to turn into something weird on Atton unexpectedly. "Welcome to How To Shoot Straight. We learn how to shoot things here. That's it. No weird philosophical angle or anything."

He waved at the table in front of him, which supported an impressive arsenal of... nerf guns.

"Today, I want to know how much you people know about aiming," he said. "Give me your name and a drawing of someone you'd like to shoot in the face. Then shoot them in the face. There, that's your assignment, go."

"Right, you have to relax," Atton said, sighing. "Glance over your gun, too."

Ringo scowled in frustration. She didn't take criticism very well.

Obviously.

Still, he was a teacher, so she took a deep breath.

"Okay." She looked at her Nerf gun. "Um. What am I looking for?"

"Hold it up, and aim with one eye," Atton said. "Close the other one. Then keep your gun steady and look right over the barrel so it's a straight line to your target."

"Okay," Ringo said slowly as she raised the gun and took aim again.

Once again, she tensed up as she pulled the trigger, despite Atton's earlier admonishment. This time the dart hit the upper corner of the paper target. "How was that?"

"Slightly better," Atton said critically, "But you need to stop bracing yourself." Beat. "Well, like that, anyway. Not like that nerf gun has a lot of recoil."

Shooting things with nerf guns should have been something Ringo was actually pretty good with given her enhanced spatial awareness and feel for aerodynamics, but it was a gun, so she was too nervous to focus properly.

"So I should try to relax? How do you do that when you're, you know, trying to shoot someone."
