Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Well, he'd only been told it a few times so far. And Faraday, while still Faraday, would hardly lie about that.

"1879," he replied. "Apparently I have to look forward to Oklahoma becoming a state."

"And several others as well," Hannibal agreed. "There are currently fifty states, and several additional territories. Fandom lies, for the most part, off the coast of Baltimore, Maryland."

"Where there is a castle." He was sort of stuck on the fact that there was a castle off the coast of Maryland.

Hannibal glanced back at the school. "You know, I have yet to hear the story of why the school is a castle. It is far from the strangest thing about this place - which is one of the reasons they ask current teachers to help newer ones."

He hefted his bag and opened it. "And I'm being remiss. Would you care for a meat or vegetable pie?"

"Oh, I could hardly impose," Goody replied.

Wait a moment.

"Did you say teacher?"

"Hardly an imposition." Hannibal was already taking several small pies out. "I have very good coffee as well, if you'd like. I bring it to share."

"Oh, dear," he added after Goody's question. "I take it you didn't come here intentionally to teach?"

Then there was another thought.

"My god, did they hire Faraday to teach too?"

"Faraday?" Hannibal asked as he handed Goody the warm pies.
wefindintheashes: (what's that over there?)

"My associate," Goody said, gesturing toward the man with one of the pies. He'd have to give one to him for sharing his bourbon. "Bless, but I don't believe that man has set foot in a school room in some time."

Hannibal had plenty of pies. They likely outclassed Faraday's bourbon by quite a bit.

He chuckled. "He wouldn't be the first teacher here for whom that's true," he said. "I am rather in the minority for having taught before I came here. Many of our teachers are new to it, though they know their own subjects. We have people here from not only different times, but also different worlds entirely, and some of those subjects can be...quite unusual."

And then there was Deadpool.

Deadpool was, as always, Deadpool. There was never an explanation for him.

And Hannibal was undoubtedly over-estimating Goody's standards for food after so many years in both the military and then on the road, versus his standards for good alcohol.

Alcohol always won. Hell, bad alcohol won.

"Might I inquire what class I am supposed to teach?"

Hannibal also had very good alcohol. And he did love raising people's standards.

"I was looking it up earlier for your co-teacher - a class on the American Civil War, apparently." He assessed the year Goody said he'd come from, and his age. "Were you a soldier?"

"With the Louisiana Tigers," Goody replied, giving him a bit of a look. At least his name wasn't known here. That was... nice.

[identity profile] never-dull.livejournal.com 2017-01-01 05:21 pm (UTC)(link)
That look wasn't difficult to interpret.

"Are you well-known in your world?" Hannibal asked. "You should know that not all worlds here share the same history; it may be that you never existed in my world's past. Or that you existed but were of no particular note. Or," he added with a smile, "it may simply be that education on the American Civil War was somewhat lacking in Lithuania and France."

"There aren't terribly many Goodnights in the world," Goody replied, ignoring the rest of his question entirely. "Lithuania? I don't think I've heard of that before."

"It would probably have been part of Russia in your day." Hannibal's expression said what he thought of that. "They have rather a habit of annexing the Baltic states."

"Or the Ottoman Empire," Goody replied. "If I recall correctly."

The Crimean War did lay some of the military groundwork for 'modern' battle plans, after all.

"Not in quite some time," Hannibal said. "And longer for me than for you. But yes, you have the area correct."
