Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"So yet again, the island has pulled you in of its own accord. I trust this time you weren't gone overboard first? I would begin to question your luck with ships."

"I question my luck with plenty of things. At this point, I might have to question my luck with doorways, as well. I was simply moving things from one room to the next when I found myself here," Nathan explained. "Hence the shoes."

Or the total lack thereof.

Hannibal grimaced. "I would offer you the use of a pair, but I suspect we aren't close enough in size."

At least it wasn't snowing?

At least there was that, true enough.

"I appreciate the offer all the same," Nathan replied. "You aren't even the first to make it, or the first to note the difficulty there."

Why didn't everyone have tiny Tom Cruise feet, huh?

"I'll make do. I've managed with worse, and I should still have enough money in the bank here from my last time spent on the island to be able to afford a decent pair of boots."

Because children in the twentieth century had better nutrition.

Except, apparently, for Tom Cruise.

"That's good to know. So, how are things in Japan going for you?" Hannibal asked.

"Well, thank you, besides the fact that Japan is in a different continent and I'm not there," Nathan replied, tilting his head slightly in a 'but what are you going to do?' gesture. "It's been quiet, for the most part. A man can come to appreciate a life like that."

Especially after war, another war, some more war...

"A respite can be welcome," Hannibal agreed. "Though Fandom is more likely to be a respite from quiet."

Because Fandom.

"And had I been hoping for one, I might appreciate this more," Nathan pointed out. "As it is, I'm standing here without shoes, with several offers of sofas lined up while I sort out living arrangements, and I still haven't gotten quite so far as figuring out what class it is that the school has lined up for me to teach."

Once he saw the name of the class, he was liable to have a good bitter laugh about it, though.

"I haven't yet seen the roster, I'm afraid," Hannibal said. He was a bit behind on things because of honeymoon. "I can check it on my tablet, if you like." He was already reaching for it.

"On your..." Sorry, Nathan needed a moment to process that. "Modern technology. Of course."

Sorry, Hannibal. The last time he'd spent any time around here, iPads hadn't even been invented yet.

Hannibal smiled as he gestured with his iPad. "Did you ever become used to it?"

He tapped around as he looked up the class roster.

"I can place a phone call," Nathan replied, wryly. "I don't recall ever seeing anything quite like that, though."

He was leaning forward just a little, curious.

Hannibal turned it toward him obligingly. "It's a touch screen." He opened the browser and switched over to the school's site, looking up the classes for the coming semester. "And...there is your class. You're co-teaching, apparently."

"Well, that wouldn't be a first," Nathan mused, looking with an intent sort of curiosity at the tablet. "What am I teaching, exactly?"

He leaned forward that little bit more, holding out a hand.

"May I?"

"Please." Hannibal handed it over.

"Thank you," Nathan said, accepting the tablet and... after a moment taken experimentally just using his finger to drag the schedule up and down on the screen (he couldn't resist), he actually read what was on the screen itself. "Hands-on History of... Ah. Of course."

Because Fandom.

"Is it a problem?" Hannibal asked. "Unpleasant associations, rather than a lack of knowledge, I'm assuming."

"Unpleasant enough," Nathan replied. "It was a dirty, bloody war. I try to avoid revisiting it whenever I have the luxury."

Fandom seldom afforded Nathan much in the way of luxury.

"I have never known - personally or by hearsay - a clean and bloodless war," Hannibal pointed out. "Are you likely to have problems with...hm. Post-Traumatic Stress it's called these days. Shellshock before that; I confess I'm not certain what it would have been called in your time. Flashbacks, severe anxiety, extreme disturbing thoughts."

"Soldier's heart," Nathan replied, helpfully. Wryly.

Tiredly.

"And it seems to me that I'm about as likely to have problems as the gentleman I'm to be teaching with," he added, holding the tablet back out to Hannibal. "Fandom is rather fond of teachers with first-hand experience, isn't it?"

That didn't answer Hannibal's question. But, really, Nathan hardly knew the man well enough to start discussing a condition that had sent better men off to die in asylums before they ever saw thirty years of age. Especially since the answer was yes.

"It is." Hannibal took back his tablet. "Well, should you like anybody to speak to, I am a psychiatrist. I'm a professional listener."

"Is that so?" Nathan's answering smile was wry. "And what exactly does listening professionally entail, Dr. Lecter?"

It was almost certainly a very different creature today than it was in 1885. Pardon Nathan's not immediately leaping up to accept the offer.

Hannibal chuckled. "Just that - listening. And perhaps suggesting new ways of approaching issues, or forms of coping that you might not previously have discovered for yourself. For some, it can also include medicines. For others, meditation. There are many forms of therapy."
