Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hmm. I don't know." Ringo shrugged. "I miss them pretty much all the time. I mean, not that I don't like being at Fandom. It's, honestly, been really great, but I still miss my family, you know?"

Tip nodded. "Definitely. My mom drives me crazy, but when I finally got home last week and saw her for the first time since Parent's Weekend, I almost burst into tears."

"Awww." Ringo offered Tip an empathetic smile. "She must be pretty awesome, then."

"She's pretty cool," Tip agreed. "But if you ever tell her I said that, I'll deny everything."

Ringo giggled. "I'll keep that in mind."

"Besides, I know how to keep an important secret like that."

"I suppose you'd have to," Tip said. "With enough sisters. So what classes are you signed up for?"

"Um, all of my classes are on Monday this semester? So, there's this class on, uh, being an adult? And one about," Ringo paused, looking a little uncomfortable, "uh, shooting."

A skill she probably should learn, but wasn't really comfortable with the idea.

Tip wrinkled her nose. "I'm glad I'm not in either of those. I hope you have fun, though."

"What about you? Taking anything fun?"

"I'm signed up for Urban Survival and Practical Diplomacy," Tip said. "Soooo, maybe not fun? But interesting, at least."

"Huh. Those kinda sound like, you know, real classes."

"Yeah. I might be doing Fandom High wrong."

Ringo laughed. "Nah. You'll have to tell me if they're as interesting as they sound," she suggested.

"I mean, they sound practical."

She frowned slightly. "Though, really, I part of the reason I want to, uh, learn shooting is because, well." She shrugged uncomfortably.

It might turn out to be useful at Fandom.

"Have you ever shot a gun?" Tip asked.

"No," Ringo admitted, shaking her head slightly. "I've, um, seen them? And seen people shoot them?" They were actually kind of scary.

"Yeah," Tip said. "They're kind of -- major. I don't blame you for wanting to learn, especially around here, but. It's not very easy."

"Yeah." Ringo's voice was soft, and she swallowed nervously.

"I'm sure, um, I'm sure I'll manage." Well, she hoped so, anyway.

Tip nodded, biting her lip.

Well, this was slightly uncomfortable.

"So. That was a really depressing note for the welcome picnic."

Ringo blinked, then snorted.

"Yeah. Sorry about that."

"Um. Tell me about something awesome?"

". . . I'm a library aide now?" Tip shrugged. "I sound pretty boring, huh."

"No, no," Ringo grinned. "You sound like someone who knows tons of awesome things!"

Tip shrugged again, dropping her head a little. "Well, you know. I read a lot. You pick up things."

Ringo laughed. "Well, I don't, really." She had a hard time sitting still long enough. "So you've got one up on me there."
