Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Another semester over, and Anders felt a faint swell of melancholy as he joined his last welcome picnic as a student. It scarcely seemed possible that his three years in Fandom would be at an end so soon.

He drowned the melancholy in an enormous plate of nachos, as was only proper.

"Oh, good idea," Ringo said as she peeked around him to see what he'd piled up. "Good way to spend the picnic, right?"

"Eating and watching people?" Anders checked, with a little laugh. "Best way to spend these picnics, I think. What are you up to?"

"Mostly the same." Ringo grinned. "I always like to look out for new faces. I mean, you never know who might turn up and be super interesting, right?"

"You never know," Anders agreed. "I haven't seen too many yet, though. It might be a small batch."

Ringo's expression sobered a bit. "You think maybe people heard about what happened at the end of the semester?"

Anders gave her a confused look, frowning. "It wouldn't have been my first guess," he said. "Why, did you hear something like that?"

Ringo blinked, then shook her head. "No. I just, I mean, I guess I'm just used to seeing more new faces and I thought there had to be a reason for it."

And while there had been some scary things since she'd gotten to the island, nothing quite at the level of the monsters and the familiar old faces who had gone through so much change.

"There are bad things every year, though," Anders pointed out. "Not to mention that half the people fall through a portal and get here by accident."

He thought about it a moment. "But maybe the island wanted to give us a little time to heal without throwing new people into the mix."

"Maybe," Ringo allowed with a thoughtful nod. "I mean, yeah, bad things have happened here, but this time felt different."

It wasn't, really, but it felt different to Ringo, at least.

"A lot of people had a worse time of it than I did," Anders allowed. "I stayed out of the way as much as I could."

"I'm glad it wasn't so bad for you." Ringo knew a lot of people had had it even worse than she had, but she was still glad that it sounded like Anders hadn't had it even that bad.

Or, at least that's what she hoped.

Anders shrugged. "I decided a while ago not to let Fandom's whims hurt me," he said. "They come and go, and as long as my mind's my own through it all, that's all I care about."

"That makes sense," Ringo agreed with a nod.

Then she frowned slightly. "You, um, ever get caught up in those times when it, you know, isn't?"
