Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Sparkle was still a touch wide-eyed as he held up his forefinger and thumb, about an inch apart.

"A smidgen he agreed. "Tiniest bit. Not very. Maybe more than not very. Kind of a lot."

Sigh.

"I think it's a toss-up," Sparkle replied, after a moment, "between actually having to look responsible and having to tell students things that aren't going to completely screw them over later. Like, maybe I'm wrong? Maybe I'd teach them something wrong. Shit, it would suck if I was wrong."

Considering the subject matter of his class, that would be bad, yes. But considering he had first-hand experience, he'd probably do fine.

"First if all, always remember: Deadpool teaches here. If he can manage it, anyone can," Kitty pointed out. "What are you teaching?"

... That Deadpool advice was possibly some of the most solid advice Sparkle had gotten today, actually. He glanced Deadpool's way, actually grinned a little, and then turned back to Kitty.

"I'm teaching... like... it's an urban survival thing. Which is kind of like the fancy paperwork term for surviving while homeless in a city, I guess."

So it wasn't really a happy subject, but at least it was a useful one.

Oh, X-Men. Life was hard when you had a genetic predisposition toward tights.

"Really?" Okay, so sue Sparkle, he looked a little more hopeful at that. As much as it sucked that anyone out there could actually make use of a topic like that, at least it was good to know he was sort of on the right track. "I mean, I gotta say I'm sorry to anyone who might ever be in a position to use it, but that's... like... it's good stuff to know. Even if you don't think you'll ever need it."

"And you never know what's going to happen, so you might as well learn. Or learn how to help somebody else in that position," Kitty shrugged. "I like it."

Sparkle smiled a little bit more, then. Okay, Kitty was getting bonus points for being reassuring, today. Seriously.

"And even if all it gives people is... I don't know... perspective. An idea of how hard it is for people to claw their way out of that place once they're there. How easy it can be to slip in the first place. Homelessness doesn't take away a person's humanity. It's easy for people to forget that."

He scuffed a toe against the ground awkwardly.

"I mean, I'll probably present that to them in a way that isn't all... preachy if you're a teenager... but there's a lot to it, you know? I want to be able to smash some biases while I'm at it."
