Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day

Thankfully, the weather on the island today was fairly nice for the tail end of December, but there was still a medium-sized bonfire going in the middle of the lawn, partly due to tradition and partly due to the potential for shirtlessness (which, Zoe supposed, was also tradition.)

The usual tables were set up with warm foods, nametags, and lists for the new and old folks to find each other. Once everything was set up, it was time to celebrate a new year and the start of a new semester!

[OCD is up! I'm consolidating this down to one post, so bring all your new and old folks over here! Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"I assumed the same," Goody replied, sounding a bit lost. "Did you at least get that damned gun?"

"Blew it straight back to the hell that birthed it," Faraday confirmed. "Next thing I knew I was here and...considerably less bullet-riddled. You?" He hadn't exactly had a chance to look back.

"Likewise," Goody replied, suddenly reaching for his vest pocket to find no flask. Maybe it was with Billy then. "They turned that beast on the bell tower. Last I recall was falling from it."

After getting a shot a whole lot.

Eesh. Faraday really, really hesitated to ask, but, "...Billy?"

You better feel bad. Or at least provide Goody with some alcohol.

"I don't know."

"Well...maybe that means he made it through?"

Faraday had paid a goddamn fortune for the bottle of bourbon in his coat pocket, but he wasn't a monster. "Here. You probably need this more than I do." Sorry not sorry half of it was gone.

"If we did, he surely did." And if you tried to tell him otherwise, he'd be forced to find his rifle.

"Thank you," he said, taking a healthy sip before blinking and lifting the bottle to examine. A far sight better than anything he'd had in years. "How did you afford this?"

He was betting Faraday stole it, to be honest.

"Boarding my horse on credit." Ah, priorities. "And would you believe that was the cheapest they had?"

"We're on an island with a castle," Goody replied, taking another sip, savoring it this time. "I'd believe anything."

"Aw, hell, Goody, that ain't even the craziest part. Guess what century it is."

This was why Faraday was letting him keep the booze.

It was awful kind of him, yes.

"...the nineteenth?"

Faraday snorted. "Try twenty-first."

"...did you spike your drink with laudanum?" Serious question time here, Faraday.

"Thought about it. But you can't buy laudanum here."

"Why ever not?" Don't tell him about the lack of opium next.

Fortunately, Faraday had not thought to look into opium availability, so he would not have to be the one to break that news. "Don't know. Guess it's not modern enough for them."

Damn you, Joshua Faraday!

"How long have you been here?" Goody asked, grudgingly giving him the bourbon back.

"Couple of days. Got yelled at by a little colored girl for callin' her colored." Faraday, no. "Apparently we're supposed to say 'black' now. Spent most of the rest of it drunk."

This walking warning for period typical isms right here.

They were learning new things every day!

"We are?" Yes, Goody was trying to picture Sam's reaction to being called that. He had to admit the man favored the color.

He was going to get punched the first time he did it, let's be honest here.

"The other way offended the girl so bad she was even mad at my horse. I don't even know. I thought I was bein' polite. Guess that's the future for you." Faraday took a drink of his booze. Thank God for booze.

"I am certain you were on your very best behavior," Goody replied with the sort of sincerity that leaned toward mockery.

It was almost as if he'd met Faraday before. "I was!"

Weird, right?

"And I believe you wholeheartedly," Goody assured him.

"Anyway, listen, Goody, I uh, well, I'm sorry it ain't Heaven but it sure is good to see a familiar face." Ease up on the feelings there, cowboy.

It did make Goody give him a softer look at least. "Likewise, Mr. Faraday."
