Culture Shock: Adjusting to Life on the Weird Side, Tuesday, Period 2
Kanan looked only mildly disgruntled today, even in spite of the... whatever the hell it had been that had gone on over the weekend. Rain. Turning him into some kind of cyborg. Weirdness. But at least it hadn't been incriminating weirdness, this time.
He suspected that meant that he was getting used to Fandom, which was a thing that he generally took to be a sign it was time to leave. But here he was. Teaching. A class.
Because he was apparently too stupid to get the hell out of town.
Cecil, meanwhile, was...Cecil.
"Hi, everybody!" He beamed at them. If this weekend had done anything to him, it clearly hadn't left a mark.
"So, today we're going to change things up a little," Kanan said, leaning back against the doorframe, arms crossed over his chest. "Up until now we've been singling things out that might be different between Fandom and here, and discussing those differences." Or just staring at Cecil's weird voting outfit.
Cecil's outfit was a perfect replica, thank you very much!
"We can't cover all of them, of course," Cecil said reasonably. "I mean, there are so many differences, and you never know what's going to stick, right?"
Kanan interrupted before he could really get going. "This week, we're going to touch on coping mechanisms for the whole culture shock... thing. We've already covered parts of the 'learn what you can about the new place' step to dealing with this sort of thing, so this week we're going to touch on healthy distractions."
Because distractions were something that Kanan had a very special place in his heart for.
And let's face it, Cecil lived in a semi-permanent state of distraction.
"Now, this stuff is pretty simple," Kanan noted. "If you start feeling overwhelmed by things that go on here, like maybe you just spent a weekend as some kind of cyborg gunslinger and you don't know what to do about that, step away from it for a while. I don't mean never come back to it, though for some people that might be a valid response, too. I mean take some time to yourself. Call a friend. Go shopping or go for a jog or read a book or cook something or play with a pet. Take some time to get your head on right before you get back to facing what's just gone on out there."
"And don't be afraid to ask for help," Cecil added. "Especially with the getting your head on part. It can be pretty hard to line up on your own. And remember, whimpering in fear and panic is a perfectly valid coping mechanism."
How fortunate was it that this advice could be applied to basically anything going on in the world today?
Kanan was giving Cecil one of his patented 'trying to figure out how to even approach that line' looks. He didn't have the faintest clue where to start. So, clearing his throat, he pressed on, instead.
"The important thing is that you recognize that you have limits, and you take time to step back and regroup whenever you need it. What kind of distractions do you guys reach for?" He paused, then quickly added, "Try to keep it clean."
