Today's Ethics class met in the Danger Shop today--which looked more like a place to nap and relax than anything mentally taxing. There were soft, squashy pillows around the room, along with blankets...and a small selection of dog toys. "Right," Anakin said, running fingers through his hair. "It's been an extremely trying few days."

"When politics change to something... terrible," Obi-Wan said slowly (not that he had experience with that), "It is useful to speak up against it, yes. But first, there is a period of mourning. For those of you who are experiencing this... we thought we would postpone our presentations."

He walked up to a small door and opened it. Small puppies spilled forth.

Anakin scooped one up and cuddled it. "They're not, technically speaking, real, so any allergies should be avoided this way. And if you'd like to talk to Master Kenobi or I--we both have some experience with rather sudden shifts in governments--we're available."

"That will be all," Obi-Wan said solemnly, and sat down.

Because we all need to play with puppies this week.

Ada liked dogs well enough, but all the ones she knew were working dogs, or at least did some work around the carnival, even if it was just guarding the boneyard while everyone was working, or watching the littles.

If a puppy wanted to come to her, that was fine, but she wasn't going to seek one out. Instead, she was going to be a blanket burrito and collapse into a pile of pillows. People like that were never good for people like Ada or her family.

Rey didn't even notice one puppy in particular until it was trying to gnaw on some of the fabric hanging down from her tunic, and then she picked him up partly to get him to stop. And then he tried to lick her face- Rey did not understand that- and okay, maybe this was a good class.

"Get away from me!" Lucille snapped at a puppy that jumped and placed its paws on her skirt. It barked playfully and jumped again.

"Go away!" Lucille would not be persuaded to play with silly puppies.

The puppy was either stubbord or stupid, because it continued to pester Lucille for the rest of the class.

Obi-Wan, in particular, knows how you're feeling.

Ahsoka had a tiny bundle of grey fluff mouthing at a lekku as she came up to Anakin. "Master, I don't understand how anyone could willingly give power to someone who doesn't even try to hide how horrible he is."

Ahsoka, you do remember how Anakin was actually kind of terrible at answering these kinds of questions without Padme around to correct him?

"They say he's telling it like it is," Anakin said. "And people are deeply stupid."

Very helpful, Anakin.

"Surely not that stupid?"

Sadly it seemed they were.

Anakin gave her a look. "You've met Senators."

"I've met Padme, and Riyo, and Senator Organa, and even Mira Bonteri." So, you know, the smart, principled ones who were outliers and should not be counted.

Anakin snorted. "That's because Padme didn't talk to the morons. The rest of the Senate couldn't find the doors to the chambers without a map and a guide."

"But even they would have figured something was up if Palpatine had just up started and shooting lightning at people before he was even Chancellor."

Right?

Anakin's face went through a range of expressions. "Well, probably. But he was Sith--too sneaky for that."

"But this guy's not even sneaky at all!"

"This is very true," Anakin agreed. "They're calling it straight talk instead of what it really is."

"But what he's saying is horrible." And stupid, and Ahsoka was rapidly losing faith in humans as a species.

Anakin nodded. "But only about certain people," he said. "And you know that beings are essentially selfish. As long as it's not affecting them directly, or they're being promised that their lives will be better because these other, lesser beings will be properly punished, far too many people look the other way." He shrugged. "It's part of the reason Jedi are trained to have no attachments. The Council is trying to train innate prejudices out of us."

Because Anakin had been so great at the no attachments thing, or at teaching it.

"Well it shouldn't be like that." Huge surprise someone was going to end up in the Rebellion, truly it was.

Knock Anakin over with a feather!

"Of course it shouldn't," Anakin agreed. "That's why everyone looks a little sick--when the bad guys win, it's awful."

"I know," Ahsoka said quietly.

Anakin leaned in to give her a quick hug.

Which Ahsoka was immeasurably grateful for, not that it stopped her from asking "Weren't you saying something about no attachments?"

Snarking made her feel better, okay?

"I'm not that good a Jedi, as it turns out," Anakin said.

"I wouldn't say that."

Of course she was eventually going to declare herself not a Jedi at all, so...

Yes. Yes, Obi-Wan did.

And it made him feel very, very tired.

I need a puppy today.
