Culture Shock: Adjusting to Life on the Weird Side | Tuesday, Period 2

"Hi, everybody!" Cecil waved at them. He was dressed in an off-brand snuggie and stilts, with a plague-doctor mask perched jauntily on his head so he could still see. "Don't worry, I'm not an actual election official, I just thought it would be neat to let everybody from other places know what they look like here."

Kanan was side-eyeing Cecil from... a good distance across the room, really.

"I remain skeptical," he intoned, eyebrow raised. "But then, what would I know about elections around here? Where I'm from, anybody can be in charge, just so long as they're the Emperor."

Okay, there were smaller forms of government from there, but Kanan was also a bitter twenty-something who tried to keep his nose out of basically everything. So.

"America's different," Cecil said. "Whenever we have a city council election, the sheriff's secret police go around and collect family members, just so everybody knows to vote for the right people if they want them back. When we have a mayoral election, everybody votes, and then we interpret the loud pulses coming from Hidden Gorge to find out who the new mayor is."

Kanan was now staring long and hard at you, Cecil. Long and hard.

"... I think I'm grateful that I'm not a legal citizen," he decided, and then shook his head. "This place worries me more and more the longer I spend here."

As well it should.

"It's a perfectly valid way of choosing leaders," Cecil said. "Democracy at work!" He grinned at the students. "So we're going to have our own vote today!"

"Well, a discussion and a vote," Kanan said, still keeping a conspicuous amount of distance away from the crazy man in the off-brand snuggie. "Let's hear what government is like where you're from. How leaders are chosen, that sort of thing. And then we'll have you cast your vote on a very important topic. Chocolate, or peanut butter?"

These were the issues, people.

"And we've got some examples, just in case you need them!" Cecil said. He held up a bag and dumped it on the desk. There were chocolate bars, little packets of peanut butter, and Reese's cups.

Because sometimes you had to confuse the issue.

"Discuss, and vote!"

More than Ahsoka cared to. At least Palpatine had been able to hide the fact he was evil from people until after they'd given him power.

"Different cities have different kinds of governments," Khadgar explained. "We have kingdoms that are monarchies, and the crown travels down through the family lines that founded the kingdoms long ago. But Dalaran is run by the Council of Six, so that all the races capable of performing magic are represented. New council members are chosen by the current members, so I suppose there's some form of voting that happens there, but it's all done in secret."

Kanan was here, and was seriously starting to question this planet and his life choices in remaining here.

Ilium had been nice. Maybe he should go back to Ilium.
