Today's Ethics class was outside. In the preserve, which was a huge step up from a desert, if you asked Anakin.

Yes, well. Which one of them had spent time in a desert lately? Either way, Obi-Wan was there, looking only... slightly tense. "We believed that perhaps it was time to remind ourselves of the spirit of charitable giving," he said, "Ethics, after all, is not simply about theory."

"And," said an unexpected addition to the teaching group today, "that's why I'm here today." Kanan grinned easily as he shrugged his shoulders. That jack-of-all-trades thing came in handy sometimes. "As you can probably tell from the chill that's starting to settle into the air, it's coming on wintertime, and some of the island's residents... frankly, are too dumb to come in from the cold. So-" he held up a handful of printouts of plans for simple livestock shelters, "we're going to build a bunch of smaller versions of these. And then we're going to wallpaper the insides with bad, preachy fanfiction from the internet. For the teal deer."

Apparently they liked that sort of thing? Kanan was just going to roll with it.

Anakin stared at Kanan. "The deer read fanfiction."

Kanan just shot Anakin a grin. "The deer like words. The fanfiction was just convenient."

"I do not," Obi-Wan said, "Want to know what manner of fanfiction it is."

He and Anakin had experiences. Experiences.

Anakin shuddered slightly. "Me either. Pair up, if you'd like, and build the teal deer some shelter. I recommend speaking briefly if you don't want them to harass you."

"Then I won't tell you," Kanan said cheerfully, and then he motioned to a pile of tools and building supplies. "Everything you need is over there. If you have any questions, I've built one or two of these things in my time. Or you can just enjoy the fine reading materials that have been provided, but we'll probably judge you for it."

"Ah, well. That makes me feel much better," Kanan half-snarked, though he couldn't help but give a faint grin. Grinning... was the best way to deal with stress, apparently. He finished pounding in the last of the nails, and then stepped back from the board. "Did you know Vader was coming, or was that a surprise visit?"

Mara snorted. "You vastly overestimate my importance if you think Lord Vader checks in with me about anything he does."

"Ah," Kanan countered. "Then you don't know for certain that he won't be back. Good to know."

Time to start researching other realities to take off to, again. Still. Kanan was hell-bent on not dying here, really.

"He has more pressing matters than checking up on a court dancer more than once," Mara said.

Oh, Mara. Kanan was giving you SUCH a look.

"I can think of a handful of things on the island that he might find more pressing." He sighed, and then reached to pinch the bridge of his nose. "Did he really, honestly not notice?"

"Of course he noticed," Mara said, giving Kanan a look back. "He's hardly a stupid man. But I don't have orders to round you up and take you back to Imperial Center, and he didn't tell the Emperor. If you're asking me to explain how his brain works...I can't."

Kanan sighed, and then crossed his hands over his chest, again trying his damnedest to look... casual. Yes. Good. Not freaking out in the least, here.

"And that brings me to another thing... why haven't you told the Emperor?"

Don't think he didn't know there were consequences for that sort of thing.

"Because I didn't my first year when I saw Master Skywalker," Mara said, biting her lip. "And by now it's too late to admit to everything."

"So... Vader knows. And Vader knows you know, and that you haven't told the Emperor," Kanan surmised, raising an eyebrow. "I mean, you know the next sane question I should be asking is why you didn't tell him then."

Because honestly, this was a level of trouble that most people would buckle under. Assuming he could trust what she was saying even now.

"Force help me," he muttered. "What a mess."

"Lord Vader keeps his own counsel," Mara said. "I'm sure he'll use the knowledge to call in a favor eventually."

"I'm sure that'll turn out wonderfully," Kanan sighed, shaking his head. "For everyone involved."

Seriously, this was not doing wonders for his urge to get the hell out of here.

"For what it's worth, I appreciate that you took the time to write that note, back at the diner." He didn't appreciate the situation as a whole, but that much had helped, in its own way. "Not a situation I hope to ever be in again. But the note was good."

"You're welcome," she said with a small smile. "It's not a situation I hope to be in either."

"So." Kanan reached a hand up, old habit having him almost reach to run it through his hair. Having it pulled back thwarted that, and mostly he just wound up resting his palm on his forehead. "After all of this, on a scale from one to ten, how much of an idiot would I be if I didn't jump on my ship and try to get as far from this place as possible, anyway?"

He was guessing somewhere around a thirteen, really.

Provided he had fuel.

"About a fifteen," Mara said frankly.

"That's... about what I figured, yeah," Kanan sighed. "Time to get on Portalocity's case again, I suppose."
