Ethics, Thursday

Today the classroom's desks were shoved to the sides of the room and a white tape was going down the middle. Anakin and Obi-Wan were standing on it. "Today we're going to explore how assumptions we make about how we interact with the world might not be universal," Anakin began.

"This is a class we teach every year," Obi-Wan said, "In an effort to communicate the principle of privilege. Privilege is a complicated concept, which touches each of us in different ways: depending on which planet we are on and what era it is, simple things such as skin tone, education, wealth, ethnicity and so on may make our lives harder or easier. One may experience privilege for one element of one's self, and lose it for another. And so forth."

Anakin nodded. "Since Fandom covers the gamut of space and time," and has a statistically unusual number of orphans, "it's very difficult to get a group of questions that accurately reflect the challenges and the privileges in your life. I would ask that you answer as honestly as you can. Master Kenobi and I, as always, will participate as well. Though we both became Jedi, which is a group of privilege in our galaxy, we grew up quite differently."

"If you are uncomfortable with the assignment, you are allowed to sit it out," Obi-Wan continued. "Please tell us if this is the case."

"Everyone else, stand on the line, please," Anakin said.

"What, like we cried about it?" Dante said. Sarcastically.

After a moment or two, he took a step back.

Mara paused at this one. She'd definitely heard some unsavory things at various Imperial functions.

She finally took a step back.

OH. SHE COULD DO THIS ONE, TOO.

Another step back from the Peridot who didn't have a leg to stand on when speaking to Gems of a higher stature (or status) than herself.

This step, at least, was marginally less exciting than the one she had taken a while before.

Anakin had never felt unsafe to confront anything. It was a character flaw.

He stayed where he was.

Very quickly and not making eye-contact with anyone in the room named Skywalker or Kenobi, Ahsoka stepped back.

Less than a year ago, she wouldn't have.

Oh joy, another game of 'one step for each or one overall?' In the end, Ada only took one step back instead of four, because she really didn't want to deal with any false sympathy or questions.

Did being called a monster by your own mother count? Her parents hadn't been exactly kind, but Lucille would never admit in class how uncomfortable it had made her, so she stayed where she was.

. . . and there went the progress from the last item. Tali would have taken ten steps back if she could.

Yeah, Khadgar was staying put on this one. He didn't exactly mind confronting people who said unkind things.

Okay, Rey had heard statements like that, but she had no problem with confrontation, so she stayed put.

Filthy Tsingano brat. How much for a night with your sister? How many Tsingani does it take to buy a horse? Like Tsingani know how to buy anything without stealing it!

Hyacinthe had gotten into more than his fair share of fistfights growing up over jokes of that stripe. And then the nobles had started wandering into Night's Doorstep and the threat of fists had become the threat of swords and...

Right. He was taking a step back.

FN-2187 was still relatively sheltered by First Order standards thought the First Order was above all of that, so he stayed put.
