Ethics, Thursday

Today the classroom's desks were shoved to the sides of the room and a white tape was going down the middle. Anakin and Obi-Wan were standing on it. "Today we're going to explore how assumptions we make about how we interact with the world might not be universal," Anakin began.

"This is a class we teach every year," Obi-Wan said, "In an effort to communicate the principle of privilege. Privilege is a complicated concept, which touches each of us in different ways: depending on which planet we are on and what era it is, simple things such as skin tone, education, wealth, ethnicity and so on may make our lives harder or easier. One may experience privilege for one element of one's self, and lose it for another. And so forth."

Anakin nodded. "Since Fandom covers the gamut of space and time," and has a statistically unusual number of orphans, "it's very difficult to get a group of questions that accurately reflect the challenges and the privileges in your life. I would ask that you answer as honestly as you can. Master Kenobi and I, as always, will participate as well. Though we both became Jedi, which is a group of privilege in our galaxy, we grew up quite differently."

"If you are uncomfortable with the assignment, you are allowed to sit it out," Obi-Wan continued. "Please tell us if this is the case."

"Everyone else, stand on the line, please," Anakin said.

Mara took a step forward. The Emperor had exacting standards--that was like support, right?

Dante let out a loud snort and didn't move.

Peridot didn't come from a family environment at all. So... Peridot was staying put again.

She was already starting to suspect that these questions would be largely irrelevant to her species, period.

Ahsoka took a step forward, leaving the Jedi wouldn't have been so painful if it hadn't been.

Anakin took another step forward, a pleased smile on his face as he watched Ahsoka do the same.

Ada grinned and did take the step forward for this one. The people who'd thought they had a claim to her might be shit, but as far as she was concerned, the Millers were her only family.

Well . . . okay, Tali did take a step forward this time. Her father's expectations might be uncomfortably high at times, but he had never tried to direct her interests away from engineering no matter what some of her teachers had said.

Amy DeLuca was awesomely supportive no matter what, so Maria took a step forward.

Khadgar frowned softly and stayed right where he was, and if he didn't look at anyone, well, he couldn't see if they noticed.

Rufus stayed still for a long moment.

Then he took a step forward.

In the sense that he was expected to succeed, he supposed it counted as a supportive family environment. Asking for clarification would only indicate that it probably wasn't, in the eyes of his teachers, so he didn't bother.

At this, Hyacinthe gave a soft smile and stepped forward. Regardless of her family, his life had never been at a loss for maternal love and support.

The wider family, not so much, but he'd never met any of them, so...

Being raised by the First Order didn't really count as a family environment, and FN-2187 wouldn't really say it was awfully supportive, either--more 'demanding of excellence,' which, hey, that was only right and all, right?--so he stayed where he was.
