"Hello, and welcome to this year's Ethics class," Anakin said, glowering from the front of the room. Don't you feel welcomed, kids? So welcomed.

"In this class, we will discuss a variety of topics concerning morality and ethics," Obi-Wan said. "Our goal is not to coerce you to give us the 'correct' answer, mind you. We are looking to help you establish your own moral code, and define its boundaries."

Anakin nodded. "And then learn to live with the consequences of the boundaries you've established. What might seem clear-cut in a classroom setting is seldom that easy to figure out in a real-world scenario. It's fine to say that you wouldn't steal anything, but when you're out of shampoo and your roommate's is right there--"

"--it may well seem tempting. Easy. And not a crime at all," Obi-Wan said. He cleared his throat. "We always like to start our first class with lies. Or rather, a lie and two truths."

Anakin smiled at Ahsoka. "And while we're aware that some of you have had specialized training in discernment, it's not always as easy to see the truth as we'd like." And Mr. "Secretly Married For Years" would know.

"I will go first," Obi-Wan said lightly. "I was once known as the Negotiator. I was born on an ocean planet in an underwater habitat. I once beat an enemy by surrendering."

Anakin smirked slightly at Obi-Wan. "I've saved Master Kenobi's life ten times," he said. "I drink my caf with sugar and blue milk, and I have four children."

Obi-Wan caught Anakin's eye as he was smirking and rolled his eyes. "And now it is your turn," he said, turning back to the class.

Yes, 'specialized training in discernment' was exactly why Ahsoka knew which of those were lies. Certainly not being around for half of them.

Ahsoka pretended to think about her answer.

"I can't really see the last one working," she said. Multiple times. That Ahsoka knew of. Honestly it was kind of worrying how often Obi-Wan had done it when you thought about it. "I mean maybe if you had someone actually taking out the enemy while you were surrendering."

"What did that caf ever do to you?" Ahsoka asked. Mostly because it was always fun watching Anakin and Obi-Wan fight about if a time actually counted.

Obviously Lucille didn't want to give the class or her teachers any information she wouldn't bring up in conversation, so she said:

"I play the piano, I enjoy reading and I have a sister."

"What is your favorite piece on the piano?" Obi-Wan asked.

This exercise was rarely fair, considering he and Anakin could sense lies. But he could use it to learn something about his students.

Ahsoka could actually think of a whole bunch of truths that would sound like lies...the problem was they'd raise too many questions.

"One of my best friends was four years younger than me, I once got in a fight in a library, I think up great nicknames." Okay, so it was more a subjective opinion than a lie.

"Seriously?" he said.

Peridot considered for a moment, and then shrugged.

"I'm a technician and certified Kindergartner, I have enough status to have a Pearl under my command back on Homeworld, and I spent several months under the impression that all human appearance modifiers were called pants."

What happened next was the fault of the teachers for encouraging Ada to lie. Really.

Not that she needed much encouragement, because, well, carnie. Selling sweet lies packaged as reality to even the most skeptical Townie was her entire profession.

"I play a mean calliope," she said, smiling as she ticked things off on her fingers. "My mother is a siren, an' 'm from Alabama."

Ada Miller, the exercise is 'two truths and a lie,' not 'An outright lie and two almost-truth-almost-lies.'

"Being here is the first time I've ever lived on a planet," Tali began. She'd played this game with some of the Normandy's crew before, in the engine room, and it had always been interesting (if sometimes depressing) to see what exactly humans did and didn't know about quarians; this game was probably not going to work the same way. "I have half a dozen tattoos, and I really enjoy dancing."

Maria was trying to think carefully about what things she could say in this class.

"I'm a pretty good musician, I have an amazing family and I used to be in love with an alien back home."

Used to be, Maria? Really?

Rey still felt like she didn't exactly have much to say.

"I came from a desert planet, I have my own speeder bike, and I'm a vegetarian."

Super interesting.

Hyacinthe thought for a moment, then offered, "My mother tells fortunes for a living, I ran a ring of informants from the time I was eight, and I speak three languages."

He was excellent at lying. Not as good as Phedre, who'd been professionally trained in the skill, but good enough.

Khadgar had to think for a moment to try to come up with mundane things that wouldn't be too strange or too personal. "Um, I've never had coffee, I'm one of those people who ended up in Fandom accidentally, and I'm allergic to cats." Thank goodness that last one wasn't true, he rather liked the cats he'd met in his life.

Obi-Wan was present though the mun was soon to leave for celebration dinner and smiling faintly at the class. Perhaps a bit thoughtful, as well.
