Culture Shock: Adjusting to Life on the Weird Side, Tuesday, Period 2

"Hi there!" Cecil waved at the students as they sat. "Welcome to class today. This is Culture Shock. I'm Cecil."

"And I," Kanan said, a little less enthusiastically, mostly just because it was difficult for anyone to be quite as enthusiastic as Cecil, "am Kanan. I'm also not exactly from around here, but then, I suppose it's safe to bet that neither are any of you."

Call it a hunch.

"Everybody's from someplace a little different," Cecil said. "Fandom's a really nice place, but anywhere can feel a little weird if you're not used to it. So that's what this class is about - getting used to Fandom and not getting really overwhelmed."

"If we do our jobs right, you can probably take what you learn here and apply it to wherever you end up going after Fandom, too," Kanan added. "After all, you'll hopefully be more used to the way the island works with or without our help by the end of the semester, but if you can deal with this place, you can probably learn to live just about anywhere."

"So," Cecil said, "let's start with introductions! Just tell us who you are, where you're from, the weirdest thing about Fandom so far, and...oh! What you hope to learn from us. Like, 'hi, I'm Cecil, I'm from a wonderful little town called Night Vale, the weirdest thing here is the librarians that aren't really very aggressive, and...well, the last one doesn't apply."

"And I'm Kanan. I came here from an ugly little planet called Gorse, and the weirdest thing that I've encountered around here..." Kanan paused for a moment. The honest answer here would almost certainly be something about how there were other Jedi still alive. And there was no way in hell he was giving the honest answer, thank you. "... Is probably Cecil."

He meant that in the nicest way possible. And then he clapped his hands together and kept talking before anybody could protest that one.

"So! Let's hear it from you guys. Name, something about where you came from, what's thrown you off about Fandom the most, and anything you're hoping to learn in our class. Go."

"Yeah, I'm Kuzco--" he paused, waiting for Theme Song Guy to start singing before remembering he wasn't here. Ugh. "--and I'm the Emperor. I'll forgive you guys for not groveling today, but only today. The thing I've found strangest is the distinct lack of groveling."

"This is the United States," Cecil told him. "We don't have an emperor." Just politicians and the lizard people overlords. "Where are you from?"

"Where I come from, the Emperor is significantly more intimidating," Kanan mused. Helpfully. Really. And not actually just being a somewhat amused ass. "It's going to be an adjustment not always getting your way, I'm guessing?"

"I'm Ahsoka," she said. "I'd say Master Skywalker's hair is pretty strange."

Because ahahahaha no, not being honest, and it was always a good time to make fun of Anakin's hair.

There was never a bad time for it, it was true.

"It's a strange hairstyle no matter what the galaxy," Kanan noted. It was okay, Ahsoka. He had a few guesses, anyway. "Think you'll ever get used to it?"

"My name is Khadgar and I'm from Azeroth. It's strange that no one else here is from there, I think, and I sort of accidentally ended up here," he said. "I went through a portal. It wasn't my smartest idea ever. There's a long list of things I want to learn, mostly how to not stand out as someone who's clueless."

"Another victim of the portals," Kanan noted, smiling wryly. "That was my mistake, too. The good thing is, once you start picking up on things about this place, you won't have to worry about standing out so much. We'll see if we can cover at least the essentials for you."

"I'm Merrill, and --" She gave a little smile and an enthusiastic wave to Kanan. "Hello again, Mr. Jarrus! I'm from Thedas, like Isabela and Anders and Cassandra, and I still feel like it's strange that no one here calls me names just for being an elf."

Well, Thorin was grumpy about it, but she saw that more like an adorable small puppy growling.

"Welcome back, Merrill," Kanan said, giving her a warm little smile and a nod of his head. "Good to see you again. I'm guessing that particular difference isn't necessarily a bad sort of strange, at least?"

Well. He hoped it was a good strange.

"I'm FN-2187 and I'm a Stormtrooper Cadet in the First Order. So I'm not really 'from' anywhere." Except the planet he'd been taken from as a small child, but he didn't know its name anyway. "We're moved from posting to posting pretty regularly. The strangest thing about the island is the lack of organization and how everyone has names." What was up with that?

Kanan's mouth opened for a moment. And then shut again. And then opened a second time. And then he tilted his head and looked at... FN... thoughtfully.

'First Order' was a new one to him.

"I guess troopers would be used to a bit more order than the island has to offer," he allowed, and managed to not say 'bucketheads,' because even he occasionally had that thing called 'tact' tucked away somewhere down deep. "Do they not earn nicknames in the First Order? I've known a few troopers who have, but I'm probably a product of a different time."

Yeah. Little bit.

"I am Hyacinthe, from Terre D'Ange, which is known mostly as 'France' here," Hya said. "I believe my strangest experience thus far was spending a week as a plant followed almost immediately by a week as a horse."

Yeah, new kids. He wasn't kidding about this.

"You know, I think I'd take the week I spent as a cat over that," Kanan admitted, frowning thoughtfully. "Does it make it better or worse, now that you know that those transformations can happen? It doesn't seem like the sort of thing you can just move on and get all, 'oh, this again,' about. But I've been wrong about things before."
