Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hi."

So she was a weird face - she was still familiar.

Peridot blinked up from her screen at--

"Oh. It's you."

This was less a statement of dismay and more an observation of fact. Peter was certainly himself, yes.

"Hello, Peter. What brings you to this... assembly?"

Peter shrugged. "There were a lot of people here, and I thought maybe I could meet some."

Which was why he was here...talking to someone he already knew.

"Are these people all teachers and students?"

"Teachers and students," Peridot confirmed, looking out at the crowd. "And you."

Which, once again, was simply a statement of fact. Peridot tilted her head at Peter curiously.

"Have you met any people yet?"

Particularly ones worth knowing?

"A few," Peter said. "You?"

"Just one," Peridot replied, wrinkling her nose and gesturing with one hand in the general direction of the boy in the red toga with the big gold crown. "He insists he isn't meant to be here, but his class schedule says otherwise."

Peter blinked at the guy who looked like...well, like he really didn't belong here. "Where does he think he's supposed to be?"

"At a weekend conference," Peridot supplied, helpfully. "Whatever that means."

Of course, if his clothing was odd, the Gem with the giant triangle hair probably wouldn't know.

"It means a gathering for people to discuss something specific, for just a couple days," Peter explained. "But if he's signed up for classes, I guess he's here for a bit longer."

"So it would seem," Peridot replied. "I think he's making more of a fuss about it than I did, and I don't even want to be on this planet!"

She wanted to be here far, far less today than yesterday, granted.

"And he looks human, too, so he shouldn't have as many issues with adjusting." Peter watched Kuzco a moment longer. "I suppose he'll learn soon enough, anyway."

"How soon is soon enough? Before or after his conference is through?"

Or perhaps before or after he figured out that there was no conference?

"Depends how smart he is, I guess." At the moment he looked...well, rather full of himself, really, so it was hard to tell how smart he might be.

Peridot's own opinion of Kuzco's intelligence was... low.

"He's a complete clod," she offered, helpfully. "He said the word 'split-so.' I'm not entirely certain he realizes that it isn't actually a word."

Peter tried, but couldn't quite make sense of that himself. In any language he knew. "Split-so? Any idea what he meant?"

"As in, 'I'm just here for the conference, then I am split-so.'" Peridot shrugged. "I figured it out with context, but it still isn't a word."

She was going to hold dear to that fact until the day she shattered, stars help her.

"Oh. I've heard people say they're going to split, meaning they're going to leave," Peter explained. "I've never heard 'split-so' before, though."

Especially not from someone who looked...ancient mesoamerican?

"I believe he might have... made it up." Peridot mused. "Perhaps he thought it made him sound unique."

She tilted her head as she looked Kuzco's way speculatively.

"I don't think he did it in an attempt to impress me, however. I think he does it to impress himself."

Peter was actually pretty impressed by that. "Probably. He looks like the type."

Peridot nodded, satisfied.

"I believe I'm catching on to how humans function, after all. Before long, perhaps I'll even fit right in."

That was probably stretching it a little, Peri.

"You're doing really well," Peter said. "A lot of humans wouldn't pick up on that. Humans can still be pretty insular about others, though."

"Well, I am a Peridot. It's my job to observe and learn," she bragged, looking quite proud of herself indeed. "I like to think I'm quite good at it."

Peter hid a smile at that. "You're the best Peridot I know," he offered.

Peridot wasn't going to get her hopes up, here, but...

"You know other Peridots?"

There was a speculative tone in her voice, there.

Oops. "No, sorry. I was teasing." Peter shrugged. "You're the only Peridot I know."

He wasn't going to mention stones again.
