Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

So, the heat meant that many of the tables and chairs had been set up in the shade, and someone had found outdoor table umbrellas in blue and gold, god help us all. But hey, a little heat never hurt anyone who wasn't a vampire, right?

Ahem. The picnic was open for warm, sunny business.

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Even though the weather was getting cooler, this was Roscoe's first chance to go shirtless at a picnic knowing that it was a tradition.

So. He had a knee-length black skirt on and a pair of DollaHyde sneakers, plus plenty of gold body glitter to complete the look. Minimalist fashion, yo.

"Feelin' like one of th' oldies yet?" Ada teased her former-little-sibling. "You look sharp."

"I am definitely loving the whole 'knowing more than some people do' thing," Roscoe agreed without a hint of shame. "You don't look so bad yourself. Those shoes are kick-ass."

"Pretty much th' only shoes I can wear that don't pinch m' feet," Ada said, looking down to admire her shoes. "'S why I wear boots so much, they just fit better."

"You gonna go around, give any of th' new kids a crash course in Fandom?"

"Love boots," Roscoe said wistfully. "I'm so glad it's fall and I can start wearing them again." Sandals were nice, but boots were the best.

"Oh yeah, I didn't tell you? You have a grand-sibling," he added. "Her name's Negasonic Teenage Warhead, so obviously she comes from a very normal background and will have a very hard time adjusting."

Smirk.

"'An you have a sister. Her name is Faith, an' she's th' one with a kickass tattoo around her eye," she said, gesturing to her own right eye. "So be nice if'n you see her."

"--but who names a kid Neg-negasonic? S'that what you said?" Ada frowned. "Is that a word?"

"I Googled it," Roscoe admitted breezily. "Urbandictionary says it means when a fart is really loud, but it only had, like, two upvotes so that's probably wrong."

He probably should have thought to ask, come to think of it. "Eye tattoo sounds cool. Negasonic's got a shaved head. For the record, if all the newbies turn out to be cooler than us, we're gonna have to start looking more badass ourselves to compete with them."

Ada made a face. "I don't pull off 'badass' too well," she admitted. "Pretty sure that's what we keep Dante around for."

"Please, of course you pull it off," Roscoe dismissed. "And just saying, you'd look seriously cool with a facial piercing. Eyebrow maybe?" He squinted at her face, trying to decide. "You can come with me when I go to get my nipple pierced," he offered in a sing-song voice.

"Course I'll come if'n you want," Ada replied, amused. "Though piercings an' I don't get on much. Doin' my ears was bad enough."

"Okay, okay. But you'd look awesome," he warned. "Or maybe you could get one of those really tiny tattoos? Not on your eye, that sounds way too painful. Maybe behind your ear?"

He ghosted over the spot in question with his fingertips, grinning. He didn't think she'd go for it, but imagining Ada with a slew of body-mods was kind of fun.

"Now that makes two people suggesting I get tattoos," Ada laughed, letting Roscoe's fingers linger. If they slid a bit farther back on her neck he'd run into a very mermaid reason why she wouldn't be getting any tattoos in that particular spot, but since he'd made the remark about being open minded at the bonfire...

Well, if he asked, he'd find out, and Ada would deal with it from there.

"First Dante, sayin' I should get a big red sun on m' side, now you advocatin' somethin' tiny. How's a girl t' choose?"

"Come on, that's too easy," Roscoe said with a big grin. "You gotta get both."

Then his fingers skated over that mermaid surprise. "Wait, hang on--", he began, startled.

"Oh, Roscoe," Ringo called, lifting her arm to wave at him. "Looking good." For her part, Ringo was dressed for the occasion, too, with a red bikini top and cutoff shorts.

Roscoe whistled when he caught a glimpse of her. "Damn. You too." He couldn't help his gaze drifting to that bikini top, but he didn't think Ringo would mind. "I just decided I need summer to last forever."

Without bikini tops and cutoff shorts, was there even a reason to live, really?

A year ago, she'd be blushing and ducking her head. But spending that year in Fandom had helped her get a lot more comfortable with herself, and if she'd minded the looking, she wouldn't have worn her current ensemble. In fact, she even grinned a bit at Roscoe's obvious appreciation.

She giggled. "I don't know. It's been kind of unbearably hot the past month or so. I think I might be ready for Fall."

"You say that now, but soon I'm going to have to wear a shirt and you'll be sad," Roscoe teased. "But I do like pumpkin spice coffee drinks. Having those again will be nice. And not sweating all my makeup off by 10 in the morning."

Ringo laughed. "I don't mind wearing shirts. Actually, before I came to Fandom, I doubt I would have been wandering around in a bikini-top." Comfortably abbreviated clothes, sure, but actually skimpy? She was still getting used to that.

"And I've never really done a ton of make-up, but I imagine that's pretty annoying."

"Everyone else's loss, Fandom's gain," Roscoe teased. "This place is so good for that, isn't it? We're all so, like, comfortable with ourselves. I mean, I was even before I got here." He wasn't embarrassed of that, either. "But back home, I knew all these kids who were really shy and self-conscious and stuff, but people here pretty much know what they're about."

"Well, some of us are still shy and self-conscious underneath," she pointed out self-deprecatingly. "But I'm working on it."

"Pff. You shouldn't be," Roscoe said - and maybe it was a touch condescending, because he didn't really know anything about what it was really like to be self-conscious, but he meant it in a complimentary way. "I feel like, man, the way you ride those ATs? You're obviously awesome. Nothing to be shy about."

He smiled at her. "So how's your picnic going for you? Met anyone cool yet?"

Ringo grinned at Roscoe, the expression a bit grateful. "Well, I know I'm awesome at AirTrek," she allowed. "Everything else, well, I'm still figuring that out."

"And so far it's going pretty well. I got a cool little sister!" She was beaming excitedly about that. She liked Margaery.

"Me too!" Roscoe said brightly. "She has a shaved head. It's pretty sick." He beamed. "Which one's yours?"

"Her name's Margaery. She's, like, from another world. One where they don't have cell phones or anything."

Ringo looked thoughtful for a moment. "Shaved head. Oh! Is it Negasonic Teenage Warhead?" She asked that as if it were a totally normal sounding name.

Or, rather, as if Ringo was just used to people having odd-sounding (to her) names.

"Yeah! You met her?" Roscoe was feeling an unprecedented big-brotherly sense of pride. "I don't think I met Margaery, but that sounds like a tough adjustment. Negasonic was, like, totally cool with the weird shit."
