Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"That's a high school class?" Peter asked. Then he shook his head. "Then again, I guess some teenagers could probably use it."

"The students here are rather unusual. Many of them have faced complicated circumstances," Obi-Wan said. "I have some hope our class is helpful to them."

"Complicated?" Peter asked. "Other than just getting here, you mean?" He imagined that was complicated on its own.

"Yes," Obi-Wan said, smiling faintly. "Some of them have suffered abuse. Others carry burdens of responsibility unusual for their age. Some are hated for what they are, while others are put on a pedestal. It makes for an interesting mix."

Peter frowned and nodded in sympathy. "The sort of stuff kids shouldn't have to go through, but seem to end up in anyway."

"Exactly," Obi-Wan said, heaving a sigh. "And in that, they can sometimes use a little guidance to determine where their personal ethical boundaries lay."

Peter smiled. "That sounds like a really good thing, then. Have you been here long?"

"Several years now," Obi-Wan agreed. "Though I had the advantage of knowing someone on the island."

For some heartbreaking measure of advantage.

"That sounds like a big advantage." Because Peter didn't know Anakin.

"Can I ask you - I've been told this place is dangerous. I haven't seen it yet, but enough people seem to like living here for long enough, not to mention the kids. How bad does it get?"

"It depends on your point of view," Obi-Wan said quietly. "I've never seen a student truly harmed or killed in any permanent sense, but it gets bad enough to leave mental and emotional scars. I've seen monsters who would try to violently turn them into one of their own, and manipulative peddlers attempting to twist minds with enchanted wares..."

Peter thought about that for a moment, then nodded. It seemed a little more dangerous than Earth, but nowhere near Hell.

"Enough to stay on guard, but not enough to leave?" he translated.

"It would depend on what you are used to," Obi-Wan said. "My life used to be rather... louder than this, yes. One crisis every few months is practically a vacation."

Peter laughed. "Yeah, I...spent a long time in a place a lot worse than this. There're people here not trying to kill me, and the land isn't treacherous."

When he wasn't blowing up trees with Kanan in them.

"Yeah." Peter shook his head. It really was.

"Where are you from?" he asked.

"A galaxy far, far away," said Obi-Wan, because he was totally that guy. "Which has spent some time embroiled in a terrible war. Yourself?"

"The place the religious concept was based on," Peter answered. "It's pretty accurate."

"There are a variety of religions with differing conceptions of Hell," Obi-Wan pointed out. (And he didn't believe in any of them.) "But I take it it was unpleasant."

"Yeah, that's one word for it." Peter huffed in laughter. "So this place is better so far."
