Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Hey, I don't see why not," Kanan replied with an easy shrug. "If they wanted to keep the townies out, they would have closed the gate or held this inside. Besides, what better way to meet more people? I think at least half the teachers in the school are here today."

Peter relaxed a bit. "Okay, good. So...a dog?"

"A dog. I mean, hell, when Stance licked his hand, Mr. Peanutbutter licked Stance right back."

Kanan still hadn't figured out there was anything weird with the name. Just like he was kind of assuming that Electroclash was just going by her last name or something. Names in his galaxy were special like that.

"...Peanut butter?" Kanan didn't seem to be joking, but seriously. "His name is peanut butter, and he's a dog."

"That's the impression I'm getting," Kanan agreed, like perhaps it was the most natural thing in the world. He paused, scanning the crowd for a moment, and then pointed. "But you probably know Earth dogs better than I do. What do you think?"

Dog? Not dog? Vaguely canine, at least?

Peter looked where Kanan was pointing. "Yeah, he looks like a really big dog on two legs." Okay, weird. "And his name is peanut butter?" That was almost as weird.

"That's the name he answered to when I spoke to him," Kanan agreed with a shrug. "Why, is that strange?"

Kanan came from a galaxy where people had completely unironic but very on-the-nose names. Especially the wicked types.

Seriously. 'Savage Opress' was a name. It was a name.

And people actually named their children that?

"Oh." Peter realized Kanan probably didn't know, "Peanut butter is a sandwich spread. Ground up nuts."

"Oh." Kanan blinked, and then shrugged his shoulders. "I figured maybe it was some kind of cultural name. Or perhaps he really likes peanut butter and he picked it himself."

Or maybe he'd earned it, somehow, the way the clones had back during the war. He glanced down at Stance for a moment, and then shrugged it off.

"Is it a strange thing to call a dog?"

"Maybe not if he really likes peanut butter?" Peter said. "It'd be a strange thing to call a person, though. And he...I guess he's sentient, if he's teaching."

He hoped.

"He's definitely sentient. And I think he thinks he's in some kind of reality television show," Kanan replied, shrugging his shoulders. "But I've never really had a conversation with a dog who can speak basic before. I'm just going to assume that this sort of thing is his normal, and go with it."

"I suppose that makes sense," Peter said.

Kanan shrugged.

"It's the easiest way to get a feel for how he works," he noted. "And besides, I don't want to offend him or anything. He means well. Even if he did lick Stance."

Still weird. In hindsight, maybe Kanan should have told Mr. Peanutbutter that licking people probably wouldn't actually go over well.

"It's...a dog thing, I guess." Peter shrugged. "As long as Stance doesn't mind."

"Stance is the one that started it," Kanan mused. "I think he's pretty okay with it. Which is good, because he shouldn't be licking people if he can't handle a dose of his own bacta."

Peter had no idea what bacta was, but he could parse that.

"He's a puppy." Which seemed to be a theme when talking about him, yes. Peter grinned and scritched Stance's head. "Getting used to having a dog yet?"

"He's growing on me," Kanan chuckled. "And that's saying a lot. I try not to get attached too much as a general rule."

The Jedi had taught him the importance of that one.

Being a fugitive on the run had really hammered that one in.

"It'd probably be hard not to," Peter said. He rubbed Stance's ears. He was really adorable.

"You'd be right," Kanan agreed. "I think he cheated, I'm blaming his eyes and that big dumb smile of his, though I don't think anybody would take my side if it came down to it."

Because of those eyes and that big dumb smile.

"Nobody wins against puppies." Peter grinned; it was hard not to, with Stance's grin right there. "Fortunately they're pretty benign."
