Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Ringo totally had her nametag on. Her name written in big letters, with the kanji form written slightly smaller underneath. It'd also be easy to see where her nametag was, since her red bikini top really didn't leave a lot of places to stick one.

Well that definitely made it easier, even if it didn't make a great first impression on Xanthippe. (But then nothing would have. Both because of her personality, as well as her feelings on the matter at hand.

"You! Are you Ringo?"

Yes, she'd just read the nametag. Don't ask her why she felt the need to check.

"Yes?" Ringo's eyes immediately moved to find the other girl's nametag. So she might be looking for a bit, wondering if it was somewhere unusual.

The other girl was definitely familiar. Like, she'd seen her around, but couldn't put a name to the face.

Xanthippe's face scrunched up in confusion. "What're you ––" Oh, right. Name tag. "I'm Xanthippe! The list says I'm supposed to move in with you?"

It was pretty obvious she thought Ringo should tell her it was all a great big misunderstanding.

Ringo's face lit up. "Oh, right!" Funny how excited she looked about the prospect. "We're going to be roommates!"

Wasn't that awesome?

"Do you need any help moving your stuff?"

"I need help telling the administration there's no reason for me to be moving my stuff anywhere." So, maybe Xanthippe wasn't quite as enthusiastic. Who would've guessed? "I'm fine where I am!"

"Huh?" Ringo looked surprised. "Oh, are you happy with your current roommate?" That was the only way that Xanthippe's reaction made sense to Ringo.

"What do you mean?" Ringo didn't understand. She didn't have a roommate? And wasn't excited about getting a new one?

"I mean," Xanthippe replied, exasperated, "that I want to keep living where I've been living, alone."

Yeeeah. Welcome to living with the spoiled rich chick, Ringo.

"Oh." Ringo looked a bit crestfallen.

"So you're not, um, looking forward to the move?"

As if that wasn't pretty obvious.

"No, I'm not," Xanthippe replied, emphatically, almost looking grateful that they seemed to now be on the same page about this. (Also completely ignoring any sign of Ringo's feelings on the matter.) "I shouldn't have to be sharing in the first place."

She was probably going to realize how much of a jerk she was being here.

But it was not likely to be today.

"Um, well, er." Ringo didn't know what to say about that. "Maybe they need to combine people so there's enough rooms for everyone?"

"But the dorms are like half empty!" Xanthippe replied, back to pretty serious exasperation. "I'm gonna complain to the administration."

She was going to take one look at the moose and give up. Just, for the record.

Ringo wasn't sure what to do with that.

"If, um, you need any help, let me know?" She wanted to be helpful, at least, even if they weren't going to end up as roommates?
