Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Oh, I'm not staying," Kuzco said. "Nope. No way. I'm just here for the conference, then I am split-so."

There's no conference, Kuzco.

"Conference?"

Yeah, Peridot was giving Kuzco a mighty side-eye, now.

"The notice the school gave me said that you were to be a new student here. But then, I suppose I am still fairly new at reading the primitive Earth language that people use here." She held up her fingers, and they spread apart to show her screen, displaying a visual scan of the letter that the school had given her to inform her that she was going to get to play sibling to Kuzco, one of the new students. "This does say that, doesn't it?"

He wasn't at all surprised by her screen of randomly-showing-up-ness. Yzma did that all the time.

"Yzma told me that this was just for a weekend!"

Peridot blinked, and then tilted her head thoughtfully.

"I suppose that would depend on how long a weekend is relative to your planet's sun. Unless you're from Earth, in which case... I'm sorry." The display on her screen shifted around a little, and pulled up a timetable. "I took the liberty of collecting your schedule for you."

She looked so pleased with herself about it, too. Look, she was doing a good job, dammit.

"We're in one class together, it looks like."

Why were all of these people trying to convince Kuzco there was more than one planet? Ugh.

"...I have to take classes? About what?"

Because aliens liked to share their delusions, probably.

"According to this," Peridot leaned toward her screen a little, "you have one class about Culture Shock and adjusting to weirdness. That one is on Tuesday. Then there's the one on Thursday that is just about..."

She blinked and tilted her head. That couldn't be right.

"About learning. That's the class that I'm in as well, but I don't think I know for certain what it actually is." And really, it was possible that the teacher didn't entirely know, either. "And then you have one on Friday about avoiding dealing with your problems. In hindsight I regret not taking that one myself."

"Yeah, that last one totally sounds like me," Kuzco admitted.

Somehow, Peridot wasn't surprised.

"It could be useful for... something," she offered. "Especially if you have a lot of problems."

Kuzco struck her as the type who caused more problems than he actually had himself. Call it a hunch.

"I don't have problems!" Kuzco said. "Well, other than everyone on the bus being completely unreasonable."

They wouldn't carry his stuff from him. THE HORRORS.

The nerve of the lot of them, really.

"... Unreasonable? How?"

Actually, Peridot needed to hear this. She thought of most humans as unreasonable, after all.

"They wouldn't carry my stuff for me!" Kuzco said. "I'm an emperor." He pointed to the crown to reinforce that. "I don't carry things!"

Peridot considered that carefully, one eyebrow raised.

"What's an emperor?"

Clearly the human had some sort of status, but being from a society of somewhat effeminate agender space rocks, she didn't have much in the way of context, here.

"A guy who doesn't carry things!"

Not helpful, Kuzco.

"Oh, I'm also in charge of everything ever."

Also not true.

Peridot... just snorted at that.

"You are most definitely not in charge of the Great Diamond Authority. Or me," she shared. Just because she was going to clear that up right then and there. "But if you ask nicely, I might be willing to assist you in transporting any luggage you might have left to move to your room."

Maybe. Peridot was still learning how to 'ask nicely' herself.

Kuzco had never really met "ask nicely" either.

"Don't blow it up," he said instead. "That girl over there--" he pointed to Negasonic, "--tried to blow it up! With her brain or something! Uncool."

Peridot considered that for a moment. What was that word that humans kept insisting she use?

"... Say please."

"Why?" Kuzco demanded.

Peridot paused for a moment to consider that one.

"Because it's fair compensation for services rendered," she decided. That had to be it, right? Though what value humans placed in such a simple word, she really didn't see. "If you don't say 'please,' I can't move your luggage."

"What if I give you money instead?" Kuzco tried.

Or pretend to, then have lost his wallet mysteriously?

"I already have a paying job," Peridot replied, shrugging. "And no need of your weird human money, anyway. It's please, or you carry it yourself."

No sympathy from the rock, Kuzco.

"Fiiiiiiiiine," Kuzco said huffily. "Please move my stuff."

Peridot considered that huffy attitude, but shrugged it off. It wasn't like she didn't have managers on Homeworld who were like that, after all.

"Fine. Which items are yours, and where do you need them moved to?"

"Room 205, my good friend, and it's that pile over there," Kuzco said, pointing to the slightly charred and cartoonishly hilarious pile of bags.

My, but that was a cartoonishly large pile of slightly charred bags, wasn't it? Peridot squinted for a moment, and then gave a little sigh.

"Of course it is."

At least being a Peridot was good for some things. Like the tractor beam in the palm of what was, for all intents and purposes, the hand of her limb enhancer. She held it out, and a green beam of energy enveloped the whole mess of luggage, which she then lifted off the ground with little in the way of effort.

"Lead on... my good friend."

He'd said 'friend' first. Maybe he was a bit of a clod, but Peridot didn't have enough friends to turn what was clearly an offer of friendship away.
