Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Obi-Wan paused, but only briefly, and then fixed Kanan with a look that was as amused as it was confused. "Did they now?" he said. "And what were they attempting to accomplish?"

"I... I think he was trying to be polite," Kanan said, looking down at the pup who was happily plodding along behind him. "Stance did lick him first, after all."

Which was a little less strange, coming from the puppy. At least, Kanan thought it was. Maybe he was wrong. Maybe Stance actually was sentient, and would one day grow up into somebody like Mr. Peanutbutter, and Kanan was not so much a pet owner as he was now a dad.

These were the things that were going to keep him up at night.

"I see," said Obi-Wan.

Which was really all he could say on the matter, wasn't it? Yes, he saw. And yes, now he saw the being that was most likely Dume's new buddy, so yes, he saw. He saw quite well, in fact.

"I suppose there are worse ways to meet a new apprentice..."

"Oh, no. No, no, no, we are not using the apprentice word when talking about Mr. Peanutbutter," Kanan said, looking back up at Obi-Wan with a start. "He is my 'teaching buddy,' which means that he teaches, and I'm his buddy, and there is no apprenticeship anything about it."

This was a much bigger concern that the thoughts that he'd been having a moment before, which had been veering dangerously close to 'I'm not picking up after him during walks' territory.

"I'm choosing to believe that I'm more like an unqualified tour guide."

It was better on his psyche to believe that.

"You were assigned to teach him the ways of the school," Obi-Wan said, not quite managing to repress an amused look. "I believe that counts as an apprenticeship."

"Oh, Force," Kanan muttered under his breath, reaching a hand up to pinch the bridge of his nose. "I'm not even remotely qualified for something like that, Master Kenobi. Mr. Peanutbutter is an enthusiastic but hopefully qualified teacher in his own right, I'm just here to show him where to find the refreshers and how the coffee machine in the teacher's lounge works."

"And not to lick other people's pets," Obi-Wan mused, "Perhaps about the gremlins..."

"Gremlins?"

Kanan... had yet to have a bad run-in with the gremlins. And his teaching buddy had only really taught him how to find the bars in town.

Because that was all Kanan had asked of him, in fairness.

"You mean like the one who works in the office? I think he's the one who keeps picking classes for me to teach."

"I mean like the ones who have a habit of biting students and teachers, compelling them to behave oddly," said Obi-Wan.

Kanan was either lucky not to have encountered a gremlin, or he was awaiting the gremlin bite of a lifetime.

Both? Both.

Probably both.

"Wait, they bite?"

Yep. News to Kanan.

"Yes," Obi-Wan said.

Serenely.

He probably knew a few gremlins.

"Well... Huh. I guess that's good to know."

That serenity was worrying, Obi-Wan. Honestly now.

"So. Why do they bite?"

Clearly not just to be polite.

"I've no idea," Obi-Wan said. "I've managed to discover that they feel a particular rage towards Anakin and his family, but it seems rather random, otherwise."

"It sounds pretty random," Kanan replied. "Though the idea of a bunch of those little guys having it out for Master Skywalker does paint some interesting mental images."

Mostly he wanted to witness this for himself, someday.

"I had some fear at first they might extend their grudge to me, but it seems to be very specific to his family," Obi-Wan said, faintly amused. "They are not bad sorts when they're not biting someone, but I'm told that's... rare."

"Well, I'll have to keep an eye out, then. And warn my teaching buddy about them the next chance I get."

Teaching. Buddy.

Kanan was putting his foot down on that one, so help him.

"Give your apprentice my regards," said Obi-Wan.

Who still sounded serene. The bastard.

Dammit, Kenobi.

"Maybe I'll send him your way to say hi," Kanan mused. "He's very friendly."

He was a licker.

"Please do," Obi-Wan said. "I am fairly friendly as well."

He was a friend to all animals. He was sure he could avoid the licking.

"Are you looking forward to the new term?"

"As much as anybody can look forward to teaching a class about culture shock," Kanan replied, shrugging his shoulders a little bit. "I suppose I do have plenty of experience dealing with it. I haven't exactly been great at settling down before ending up here, and all."

"Have you assembled some manner of syllabus yet, or are you playing it by ear?" Obi-Wan asked. "Though yes, I suppose you are something of an expert on the subject."

"I'm still trying to figure out if it's cheating to ask the students what they've found is most different about here compared to whatever home they're used to," Kanan admitted. "We might go over a few things on the island that could give students a leg up on sorting things out for themselves. Like the library, if I can convince Cecil that the librarian probably isn't going to eat him."

Probably.

It was hard to be sure around here, and Kanan had yet to meet Constantine.

"It may be useful to ask, at least," Obi-Wan opined. "I know some years we've had more students from previous centuries in this galaxy, while other years have seen more aliens, or even people from its future. It would be helpful to tailor your classes to your students."

"Especially in a class about adjusting to big changes like that," Kanan agreed. "I wouldn't want to miss something important just because I'm drawing from a completely wrong set of experiences, after all."

"My greatest advice with these students would be to ask as many questions as possible before you presume anything," Obi-Wan said thoughtfully. "They do like their curveballs."
