Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"Yeah, 'cause Portalocity is super reliable." Eliot rolled his eyes. "Just makin' sure we're clear. How exactly did that guy find out where you'd be, anyway?"

"They have rarely given me any trouble," Hannibal said.

He looked a bit pained at the question. "It is...a longer story, but in short? He had an invitation."

The look on Eliot's face was impressively withering.

"Right, so, rule one of having people who want to kill you is don't invite them places."

Unless they were traps so you didn't have to worry about that particular person trying to kill you anymore. Rule number one of traps? Don't bring kids along.

"Had I known he intended to kill me, I would not have," Hannibal said. "Or at least," he amended, "I would have warned somebody."

This had not been a trap. A trap would have been organized.

"Yeah. . . . He didn't seem real subtle to me."

Hannibal chuckled. "Subtlety has never been Jack's strong point, no."

"And you didn't notice that he was pissed enough to hunt you down on your wedding day and murder you."

"We haven't spoken in years," Hannibal said. Yes, they'd fought then, but hadn't Jack gotten that out of his system by now?

"And clearly you left things in a super great place."

"Not the best of places," Hannibal admitted, "but we were friends for longer than we were adversaries. And he is an FBI agent. Minor violence was a possibility, but I hadn't thought he was quite so motivated as to kill me."

"Always assume law enforcement wants to kill you," Eliot muttered. In his experience, it was more often true than not.

"I suppose I'll have to in the future," Hannibal said. "It hasn't been the case in the past."
