Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s 32C outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

A roommate. At least Faith was used to having roommates.

She looked around for this Khadgar, not sure what she was expecting. If she was being honest, she was sort of hoping he would look as weirded-out by this place as she was. At least that would feel normal.

Khadgar still wasn't sure what everyone was doing out here, but he'd been so happy to find people that he'd followed along with putting a sticker on himself with his name to try to blend in. Then he'd noticed one of the papers had his name on it already, and now he was just standing around looking a little helpless as he tried to figure out what the hell he'd gotten himself into.

Faith could definitely relate to the helpless thing.

"Khadgar," she said once she spotted him and his nametag. "Did I say that right? I guess we're living together."

"Excuse me?" Khadgar said. He looked at her nametag, and then at her in general, and then back at the table where the list had been. "Is that what that paper said? But you're a... I mean, we're not... what?"

He was usually more articulate than this, but what?

Faith hadn't expected a reaction like that and frankly, wasn't sure what had caused it. Suddenly self-conscious, she looked back at the list to confirm that she had gotten it right. "Is something wrong?"

Khadgar frowned and quickly shook his head, not wanting to make her feel bad. "No, I just... you're a girl," he said. "And I'm not a girl, but we're supposed to share a space and... this has been a very strange morning, I apologize."

"Oh." And here she had been thinking there was a real problem. "No, it's okay. I'm used to sharing my room with guys." That had come out way wrong, but she breezed past it. "Um, we can put up a curtain or something if you're uncomfortable."

"No, I'm sure it will be all right," Khadgar said quickly. That was what people who weren't useless around girls would say, right? "I'm used to sharing a room with multiple people, so having just you and I in the room might be a nice change of pace. You've... come to the school as well?"

Faith looked for a moment like she thought the question was stupid, but she quickly schooled her expression into something a little less icy. She didn't want to start having people dislike her on the first day, but she was out of practice with meeting new people, people she wasn't comfortable with yet.

"Yeah. I've never really gone to school before. It's very new."

"Well, at least we're both new to this. We can learn together?" Khadgar said with a hopeful tone. "And I won't take up much space in our room. I didn't bring much with me besides books."

"Am I supposed to have books?" Faith asked, taken aback. "I don't have books. I just have clothes. Not that many. Uh, and I'm kind of messy, but you can tell me if it's getting in your way."

She was used to living in what was basically a frat house. Some habits had been hard to resist picking up on.

"The books I have are my own journals and such. Things with sentimental value. I'm not the most orderly person either, I'm a bit of a packrat, so I imagine your mess and my mess will match," Khadgar said.

Faith cracked a smile. "Good." That, at lest, would feel like home. "Oh- and if we have bunk beds, can I have the top one?"

"I don't see why not. I don't have a preference there," Khadgar said with a smile. "In fact, I think I'd be happier closer to the ground."
