Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part I

It may have just been a coincidence that the weather was sunny now that Fandom was back home in Maryland, but no one was going to complain.

Okay, maybe they were going to complain a little since the sun meant it was in the high 90s ~~32C~~ outside, but that just meant there was a good excuse for all the ice cream on the buffet table of picnic food.

There was the usual second table set up as well, stacked with nametags and lists to help folks locate their siblings and roommates. Once the chairs were set up and the tables were glittered, it was time to welcome the new folks and start a new semester!

[OCD is up! This is part one of the picnic, specifically for meeting siblings, roommates, and teachers. The rest of the picnic is happening here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

Another unfamiliar name, in an unfamiliar styling. Margaery kept her smile firmly in place, but inside, she was trying not to crumble. She had to share a room? What sort of quarters would these be? She'd slept abed with her maids-in-waiting, of course, and a septa had overseen her childhood - but she was sixteen, and had become quite used to her own privacy.

Oh well. Perhaps it wouldn't be so awful.

Shiemi spent a long moment looking at the list. She shared a room! She was both excited and nervous. Except for ExWire missions, she'd only ever lived with her grandmother and her mother, so she was a little anxious about the experience. But on the other hand... A roommate. That was almost a built-in friend, right?!

"Marggg... Marzjh..." the blonde stumbled over the western name, hoping to figure it out.

"Margaery?" she supplied, hearing the girl struggling through it. (For what it was worth, her pronunciation landed somewhere adjacent-to-but-not-quite-exactly the English name 'Marjorie,' not that that probably helped at all.) All right, so this was to be the roommate.

Maybe it wouldn't be the worst. She was a girl, at least.

"Is that - I'm Margaery Tyrell, and if you're Sh...Shy - how do you say your name, dear lady?

"Ah! Mar-jor-ie? Like the herb...eh?!" Shiemi jumped a little bit away and blushed. "Ah! I'm... I'm sorry!"

"I mean, nice to Meet you! It's a very pretty name!" She bowed apologetically; hopefully messing up her name wouldn't make the other girl upset! "I'm Mori..." No. Remember! America meant western style! "I mean, Shiemi. Shiemi Moriyama."

Though it came out flustered, if Margaery could catch it, Shiemi's name sounded a lot like 'she-emmy'.

"Shiemi," Margaery repeated, carefully sounding it out with as reassuring a smile as she could muster. "It's wonderful to meet you. Are you far from home?" She leaned in, as though confiding a secret. "I feel like a fish on dry land, so far. Everything is so different from home."

The other girl seemed flustered, nervous - maybe she felt the same? Margaery doubted it would hurt.

Shiemi nodded and smiled back, more than a little relieved. Her new roommate seemed very nice indeed and not at all upset with her! "It... It is. I'm from Japan, so yes. Things are very different. And this is my first time away from home AND at a school..."

Her smile turned a little more excited. "It's like an adventure, though, right?"

"It's mine, too!" Margaery exclaimed. "First time at a school, I mean. I've been away from home before, but...always with my family."

She gave a little shake, as if to rid herself of her loneliness with a wave of her hand. "It is an adventure," she said firmly. "Is Japan...near to here? I'm afraid I'm quite far away from my own home."

"We're the same!" Shiemi beamed at her. That meant they could be friends, right?

"Japan? It's across the ocean. It takes almost a whole day to get here, even flying."

"You flew here?" Margaery should have been prepared for the idea - especially since she'd been at an airport - but somehow, she still wasn't. "How?"

Shiemi nodded. "Though the Director offered to let me use his key if I chose. But I was trying to be as normal as possible."

"Didn't you fly here? You said you came from far away, too?" Shiemi raised an eyebrow. "Where are you from?"

Margaery shook her head. "I'm from the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros," she told her. "My father rules the Reach from Highgarden. But...no one here has ever heard of my home, and I have certainly never flown. I think I'd remember that."

"This was my first time flying! The plane was sooooo big! and there were so many people!" She'd been so quiet on the trip they'd almost forgotten to serve her dinner. "I could have use one of the Director's keys, but I've always wanted to take an airplane trip!"

Shiemi changed from beaming excitedly to seriously thinking, tapping a finger to her lip as she concentrated. "Hmm. "I've never heard of Westeros, but I remember learning a little about the Seven Kingdoms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Warring_States) in my lessons. But I thought they were unified now." And in China. Margaery didn't seem Chine...

"Wait, he's the ruler? So you're a PRINCESS?!"
