Cultivation and Gardening, [Wednesday, 4th Period]

The classroom had been slightly dusty, so Zhaan had shown up early enough to brush the film from the surfaces they'd require. She'd then gone over her notes, checked that her rather casual attire of deep blue robe and fluffy bunny slippers (easily hidden under the hem of the robe, and replaceable with quite serviceable boots for the walk back home) hadn't picked up a mote of dust, and then settled down.

As the students trickled in, she arose and smiled. "I am Pa'u Zhotah Zhaan, and I'd like to welcome you back to Cultivation and Gardening. Mr. Justin Quayle, rather sadly, had to leave us, and I've been asked to cover his position through the end of the semester.

"I do hope," said Zhaan, head tilted slightly as she studied the students, meeting their eyes carefully. "That you have all been taking care of your plants. My predecessor has left notes, which gives me a beginning point and a possible end."

She paused, shuffling the papers on her desk, then smiled serenely. "Perhaps starting with something simple? On Friday, I'd like to view your plants. Your assignment until then is to talk to them, entertain them. Treat them with respect. And don't forget to water them."

"Today, I'd like to discuss the different effects wavelengths of light have on plants. To begin, the most common light plants are exposed to is the--I suppose it's yellow--sunlight from your star, Sol. The effect is rather... like soaking up a calm moment just after the rain. Artificial lights produce different effects. Your common lightbulb is mostly not noticeable. Fluorescent gives a rather tingly sensation, but can cause the plant to wilt from--what would be in a human--nausea." Remembering her own brief encounter with a rather obnoxious fluorescent tube, Zhaan twitched slightly.

"Other types, I haven't studied. At least not here. And the rest are further afield than your solar system." A smile touched her lips. "There are, a few pulsars that produce rather... astounding sensations for a plant." Not elaborating, she tapped her papers. "Thank you for joining me, I hope to see you all again Friday."

Walter signs in and grabs a mug of tea with a nod of thanks to the interesting new teacher.

Macbeth signs in and grabs a mug for himself.

He smells of breakfast cereal. He probably always will.

Walter listens to the lecture with, if not personal interest, academic interest at least. He doesn't really blink at Zhaan's appearance - he dates a green mutant, after all.

However, he glances at the pot where his violents (http://www.geocities.com/eribella/plants.html) are growing quite nicely and wonders if talking to them is really that great an idea.

Sharon takes notes, and has to grin at the order to talk to her plant. She's been doing it a lot, even if the plant doesn't seem to completely enjoy it.

Pippi listens with interest.

She doesn't like floresent tubes either.

Throughout the class, Macbeth continues to cast somewhat paranoid glances toward his plants. Most of which are dying.

He imagines that they're not pleased with him in the least, and he's rather concerned that he has to maintain a verbal rapport with the potted distant relatives of the trees of Birnam.
He's never had a conversation with a plant before...
He decides to take one of the potted plants back to his room after class in order to practice his conversational skills to greenery. There must be some trick to it. He's seen plenty of trees walk before, but not once has one commented on the weather to him.

He's far too busy pondering what one says to a potted lettuce plant to even take note of the fact that his new teacher is blue.
