There was no hot chick waiting for the class today. Which was probably a bit of a downer. It certainly was for Deadpool. But that wasn't important right now.

"So, your teacher has things to do and I have been promised nice things in exchange for filling in for her," he said cheerfully. "Which means we're gonna watch a movie. Because my healthiest relationship has involved stalking, so... Not qualified."

At least he was up front about this?

"Enjoy the movie and maybe take a nice nap. I don't know, I'm not picky about this stuff. You do you, kids."

Oh, Meg Ryan. When will you get it together?

There was a lot going on in this movie that just didn't make sense to Ringo. Why didn't they just text each other or something?

"I don't get it," she muttered more than once.

This movie relied a lot on technology Hyacinthe had no understanding of. So he was going to watch, confused, for most of it. That confusion was mitigated by his delight over the concepts of movies themselves.

"This is like a portable play!" he said to no one in particular. "A rather stupid play, but a play!"

"You ain't seen movies b'fore?" Ada asked, surprised. "I promise, lots of 'em are better than this."

These people were terminally stupid, in Ada's opinion. They deserved to be miserable at each other.

"Or sometimes they're bad on-purpose, an' really funny."

"There is nothing like this in Terre D'Ange," Hyacinthe said, turning to give Ada a bright (and genuine!) smile. "Even among Shemhazai's own scions! And here I thought your light at the touch of a switch were impressive."

Well if electric lights and movies were interesting... "Anyone shown you how to use your phone yet?" Ada checked. "You can use it to talk to people who ain't in the same place as you, an' watch movies or take pictures."

"Phone?" Hyacinthe asked, testing out the word with obvious unfamiliarity. "I do not think I have such a thing, and even if I do, no one has shown me what to do with it."

There were four or five ways he could have turned that into a dirty invitation, but she had snagged his interest in another way as well.

Ada pulled hers out of her back pocket. "Most of 'em look similar to this," she said, pulling her chair over to sit next to him so they were sitting shoulder-to-shoulder. "I can use it t' send a message to anyone I know, any time -- with my voice or just with text -- an' they get back to me when they feel like it."

"So...like letter writing, or sending messages?" Hyacinthe asked, looking at it with interest. "These things would put my network out of business, were they available in Terre D'Ange. Would you show me how to use such a thing, beauty?"

"Still ain't no replacement for actually talkin' to people, or the intimacy of a letter, but it's a good sight faster," Ada laughed. "You c'n save your flattery; I don't need wooing t' be convinced to help someone with their phone."

"You'd still be beautiful even if I knew how to use such a device," Hyacinthe said cheerfully. D'Angelines appreciated beauty regardless of circumstance. "And your skin sparkles in the light. Were I trying to flirt or flatter, I would have started by calling you Star of the Evening."

That's what he called all the gadje marks. Ada wasn't one and likely wasn't the other.

"Well if'n it's my sparkles you like, it's called 'body-glitter,' an' you can buy it at Dite's or Demon Marcus," she said, trailing a finger along one arm to wipe some off and reach over to deposit it on the back of his hand so that he, too, could shimmer if he liked. Of course, it wasn't the only reason her skin sparkled, but leave it to a carnie to hide a lie inside a truth.

And it was reasons like that why Hyacinthe was starting to doubt Ada counted at a gadje, truth be told.

"You would share so easily?" Hyacinthe asked. "In Terre D'Ange, we have this as well, but even the dust made from precious metals still costs more ducats than a boy like me can afford."

Ada shrugged. "I already bought it; costs me nothin' now to share with you, if'n you think it's pretty."

"I dunno how they make it, but it's not so expensive," she said, miming the size of her jar with her hands. "This much for about ten dollars, an' I can make it last a few weeks. It costs more if you like the nice, expensive kind; edible, flavored, things like that, but sometimes it's worth it."

Hyacinthe had no idea what dollars were to ducats, though filed away the idea that ten of them was not considered terribly expensive. "And this?" he asked, looking at the glimmering on the back of his hand. "Is this edible or flavored or the like?"

Ada's eyes crinkled with mirth. "Depends what mood 'm in, but mine's most always edible," she said, grinning. Because, well, she had friends who liked playing. "This one just tastes like sugar, but some of 'em are like fruits."

Hyacinthe deliberately ran his tongue along the back of his hand where the glitter was. "Sweet," he agreed. "Though with an undercurrent of spice. I wonder if that comes from my skin or yours, you think?"

Ada just shook her head. "You'll gotta do better than that if'n you want to find out," she said, shaking a finger at him. Ada knew better than to swoon at the flattery of strangers, especially sweet-talking boys with pretty eyes.

Awww, but look how sad and puppyish those pretty eyes were now!

"I am simply making note of what I tasted!" he protested, projecting innocence for all he was worth. "Your suspicions of my intentions may quite wound me!"

And, just like that, he dropped the innocent act and gave her a completely genuine smile. "Though, were I to guess, it would not be your suspicions that hurt me, but your wit. And possibly a knife I've no doubt you're hiding somewhere."

See? He would play the idiot swain for her, but not insult her by assuming she'd fall for it.

"Knives aren't allowed on school grounds," Ada said primly, tucking her curls back behind her ears.

Which was not an answer one way or another, no.

"Ah," Hyacinthe said, nodding solemnly. "That indeed would be good to know had I any."

Which he wasn't saying for certain, one way or another.

"It would be good to know, wouldn't it?" mused the girl who most definitely something sharp hidden on her, because she was not going to be caught defenseless again.

"Now." She picked up her phone off her lap to wave it at him. "You want to learn how to use this or not?"

"Indeed," Hyacinthe said and most (but not all) of the flirtation was gone from his voice when he said so. "Everyone I have seen carries such a device and my roommate seems to treasure his. Understanding these devices will no doubt be useful."

"Ain't no one from th' school given you one?" Ada asked, making a disgruntled tsk in the back of her throat. "I swear, that office moose ain't got the sense the world gave a sheep."

"Come find me sometime this week, an' we'll get you one." Legally, even. Probably. "Now--" she leaned in, making sure he had a clear view of what she was doing. "You turn it on like this, and if I wanted to, say, send Isabela a written message, you push the this one. I select her name, and I type the message in this stupid small screen--" Look, it was hard with webbed fingers, even as small as the webs were and as skilled as she was at ~~hiding~~ working around them. "--And I press the 'send' button."

"You should tell her than Hyacinthe sends greetings," Hya suggested with a grin. "and wishes to further our earlier acquaintance."

What? He was just being polite!

"'Further your earlier acquaintance?'" Ada echoed, shaking her head in amusement. "Careful around 'Bela, Hyacinthe, she's a pirate."

...said the girl who had left with her after class on the first day, in search of booty.

"I've known a pirate or two in my time," Hyacinthe said. "Well, more sailors than pirates. Though I've heard they pirate against our enemies from time to time." He flashed Ada a grin. "I've no fear of pirates, though I'll claim a healthy respect."

And a liking for that booty.

Townies. That was about all Ada had to say about this movie. Townies.

She was seriously starting to wonder if 'leaving' was an option, since 'nap' apparently was.

Ooo, a romcom! Mabel was thrilled to be watching this! It was so educational!

And it was entirely possible that she was muttering "Now, kiss," under her breath any time any two characters were in the same room. That was okay, right?

Yeah, still not a hot chick.

"I won't apologize for that."

I hate having a cold. Fyi.
