Oh, God, this was actually happening. There was an actual classroom, and actual students who would expect Vanessa to teach them things.

Okay, this was cool. She was cool. She could do this.

They were so young. Right, Vanessa, deep breath.

"Hi, guys!" she said, pasting a smile on her face. "I'm Vanessa Carlysle, and this is 'Building Healthy Relationships.' Now, you can just call me Vanessa, I don't think anyone's called me 'Miss Carlysle' in my life. And you might be wondering what qualifies me to teach a class on relationships, which, um, I've had a few? And after some serious bumps in the road, one of them is even working out pretty well! So, I don't know any of you, either, and I honestly didn't expect to get this job so I didn't really prepare for this," oh God. Had she said that part out loud? "So how about you introduce yourselves, and tell me something about you and why you took this class, what you want to learn, that sort of thing? That sound good?" She hoped it did, because she didn't have a better plan. "Who wants to start?"

Ringo Noyamano

Ringo found herself grinning just a bit at her teacher, but she also felt a bit worried. Maybe this would just be an awkward first class, and she'd be able to learn a lot later on?

Introductions always seemed to push Ringo back into formality. So when it was her turn she stood up, clasped her hands in front of her, and offered a bow. "Hello. My name is Ringo Noyamano." Her cheeks turned slightly pink as she took a deep breath before continuing. "I signed up for this class because I want to learn how to be a better friend."

How could she make her friends happier? How could she be there for them? (And, yeah, there were a couple of faces that she couldn't help but have in mind as she asked herself those questions. Alluka. Dante. Kathy.

Isabela

"Isabela, I'm here because there's been some kind of paperwork mix-up."

This is why you picked your classes when you were sober, Isabela.

"Can you think of any specific ways you want to be a better friend?" asked Vanessa, who hoped it came off as 'trying to make her students think for themselves' and not 'help a sister out here.'

"Tough luck, you're stuck with me now," Vanessa told her. "Now what could you stand to learn about relationships?"

Roscoe

"But I already know the important parts," Isabela protested. "Sex is great and marriage is terrible."

Oh, god. Roscoe so hated his grandfather for signing him up for this one.

His tone was flat and his expression dryly amused when he introduced himself. "What up. I'm Roscoe, and I'm in this class because my grandpa's a therapist and thinks he's hilarious."

"Um." That was a good question!

"I guess, just, um, how to know how to help people? To know when they need it?" She should probably have 'to know when they didn't need it' on that list, too, but that thought didn't even occur to Ringo.

She was kind of a meddler.

Ada Miller

Was Ada snickering at Isabela's answer? Yes, yes she was.

"We'll talk about that," Vanessa promised. "And about knowing when they don't need your help, too." She'd learned that one the hard way herself.

"Yes to the first, second one...sometimes but not always. Sometimes marriage can be great." Or so she was hoping.

"Ada Miller and I ain't got a clue how I got signed up. The moose probably thinks he's funny," she said cheerfully. "I mean, I already took sex ed."

ADA NO.

"Well, I don't know your grandpa," Vanessa said, "but you're here now, so deal with it. Like Isbela, you're stuck with me now."

"Sex Ed is a whole other segment of the topic," Vanessa told her firmly. It was also probably one she was way more qualified to teach, but that was another story. "Relationships are not just about sex. You don't have sex with your friends, unless they're friends with benefits. Or your parents." A beat. "I hope. And you don't have sex 24/7 with your romantic partner, probably. So there's a lot to cover."

Roscoe grinned. No teacher at his old school would have said that.

"Nah, you're stuck with me," he corrected her cheerfully. "I've got a lot of parental mistakes to unlearn!"
