It was a decidedly stiff-looking Cassandra who walked into the library at noon. "Garik," she greeted, almost distractedly.

Face looked up from his sorting and grinned. "Cass."

"I need to talk to you," Cassandra said tersely, walking towards the desk. "You may not find it pleasant."

She glared at a squirrel until it skittered away.

She sounded serious. Face put the book he was holding down.

"You sound serious."

"I... you remember Anders, do you not?" Cassandra said, hovering by the counter.

She had to tell someone. At the very least, she could not keep it a secret from Garik.

"We've had some classes together," he said. "I kind of get the impression you two don't get along very well."

Given how vocal he'd been about Mage Rights in Speech class.

"I found him attempting to use blood magic to summon a demon and forge a road into the Fade on Friday," Cassandra said, because she did not enjoy talking around things even under normal circumstances. "I had to return him to the Circle before he harmed anyone on the island."

"I see," Face said, as neutrally as humanly possible.

He didn't, exactly, but Cassandra obviously needed to talk, so it was probably better to let her do that before asking questions or offering an opinion.

"I have not informed the authorities as of yet. Previous experience tells me they would not understand," Cassandra said. Stiffly. "I am... considering whether to tell his friends on the island."

A pause.

"That is all."

She just hadn't wanted this... secret hanging over her head with Garik all the time. If he disapproved, it was better to settle it now.

Face didn't know how he felt about it yet. Summoning a demon sounded like a suicidally dangerous thing to try, but Anders had never come off as that stupid, and he hadn't been lying in class. Understandably biased, but not lying.

"I think it would be dishonest and dishonourable not to say something because you wanted to avoid the consequences," he said carefully. "And that you know that, or you wouldn't be telling me now."

"I do," Cassandra said.

With or without him saying this, it would most likely only have been a matter of time before she'd informed them.

"It is more a matter of... who and how, I suppose."

And Garik had always been better at that than she was.

It was hardly a surprise but, sithspit, that wasn't hard sometimes.

"Principal Winchester," he said, after thinking it over. "She'll have to know one way or another, and it'll be worse if she finds out from someone else."

"And perhaps she will know who to contact better than I do," Cassandra said, after a long pause. "I have attempted to make a list, but I have not gotten much further than his roommate - and his deceased lover."

It took every ounce of body language control a Lorrdian could muster for Face not to bury his head in his hands. That at least gave a reason for the demon summoning.

"You're also going to need to tell her why you did what you did," he said. "And I don't mean 'because Anders had a case of vape for brains'."

"Because he had lost control and was determined to render himself a danger to the rest of the school," Cassandra said flatly. "As well as making one particularly terrible attempt at killing me."

Which would be 'the case of the vape for brains' Face mentioned.

"That explains why you had to stop him," he said. "But she's going to want to know why you didn't then bring the matter to her or the troopers, because we're not in Thedas and you don't actually have authority here."

"The troopers have no idea how to handle a blood mage," Cassandra replied, eyeing him. "If there is a way to calm him and teach him how to control himself, it lies in the Circle. If he has already passed the point of no return, the Circle will know what to do with him. The local administration is ill-equipped."

Face wasn't saying this just to be argumentative, but if he could think of these points, then Zoe probably could too.

"You might be right about that, but you could also be wrong," he said. "I'll freely admit I don't know much about magic, but I also know that there are people on the island who do, and yeah, some of them are members of the administration."

Such as the Librarian whose office lay over yonder.

"They do not know our magic," Cassandra said stubbornly. "I've yet to meet anyone who knows of the Fade, or who properly understands the dangers of possession and abomination. Mages are already weak to such things. Doubly so if they are half-trained children who cannot control their emotions."

Anders had tried to use Garik against her, for Andraste's sake.

Face should have been flattered that Anders thought that might work.

"Which is an argument you could have used on them," Face pointed out. "I get that what Anders was thinking of doing was incredibly stupid, but Cass, he tried to do something that could have have dire consequences, you actually did something that could." When people used phrases like point of no return, it didn't mean anything good.

"Yes," Cassandra said, her voice incredibly steady and firm. "But whether it could is in Anders' hands. If he has made no contact with demons yet, if his mind can be cleared, then he will live. If he has fallen so far into madness that he poses a threat to all around him, he will not. I have merely done my duty."
