Fandom High Welcome Picnic, Front Lawn of the School, All Day: Part II

Gosh, the summer picnic was so much nicer--and warmer--than the spring one. There were tables and chairs set up in the sun and the shade, and more than enough food for everyone. Hopefully, everyone was up for socializing for a while!

[OCD is up! This is the picnic post for general mingling. Roommates, fake siblings and teachers are all here. Since it's outside, the picnic is open to all students, teachers, and townies!]

"You're not quite frowning as hard as you do sometimes," Merrill informed him. "What's got you in such a good mood? Is it the food? It's the food, isn't it?"

It was still resting murder face. Just . . . Maybe more premeditated than crime-of-passion. Maybe.

A cheerful murder!

"It may be the food," he granted her. "Or our new location is... similar enough to home."

In a way.

In a 'if you squinted at it sideways' way. But all the key tropes were there!

"I didn't even notice," admitted Merrill, because noticing would require her to be far less preoccupied than usual. "Have you gone exploring it yet?"

"I have been to what they consider the Dwarven quarter." And felt at home for five seconds before the language thing didn't jive. "They have Elves of a sort there as well."

Two kinds! Well, technically three.

"Do they?" And there was Merrill, perking up right away. "I wonder if they're very different from the Dalish. Or if they're more like the city elves. I wonder --"

Well, this was just going to give her endless fodder for speculation.

"How were the dwarves here? Are they really different?"

"They spoke the common tongue, but not the one of my people." Which disheartened him a bit. "But they were mighty warriors and smiths."

Because tropes, Thorin. Because tropes.

"The elves I saw were... more colorful than you?" Because they were Night Elves.

But not Night Elves as in the squad of archers that helped Loghain Mac Tir in the Fereldan Rebellion.

"Oh." Merrill's shoulders drooped a little bit. "Then they probably don't speak our language, either." Maybe they were closer to city elves?

Then, abruptly: "Keeper Marethari says that the dwarves of Orzammar must never look up and see the sky, or they'll be exiled to the surface forever. I always thought that seemed a bit harsh. I wonder if that's true for the ones here?"

"Many live in a city of Men," Thorin replied, wondering if this Keeper Marethari had brain damage of some sort. "My people have our halls deep within the mountains, but we do not shun the light of the sun."

And that jackass had nothing on a prince and descendant of Durin the Deathless.

Hey, that was on the ancient dwarves who were just that afraid of dragons. And then it had gotten weird from there.

"That's a relief. It makes more sense that way," Merrill said. "I probably would have forgotten not to look up, and that would have been it for me."

Well, it'd surprise no one that most of the Dwarven rings of power had been consumed by dragonfire. So. There was that.

"I think it best I never meet this Keeper of yours." Thorin would totally end up in a fight. Noses would be broken.

And then Merrill's clan would side-eye her for other reasons than blood magic!

"It's probably just as well," Merrill decided. "She's kind enough, most of the time, but it isn't much fun getting scolded by her. That's usually me, though. I don't think she'd . . . I don't know where I was going with that. Never mind."

Yay for non-blood magic reasons!

Thorin nodded solemnly like he completely followed that. "Is she your instructor then?"

Just smile and -- well, just nod, Thorin. It's really the best reaction.

"She's the leader of our clan -- but yes, my teacher. It's the Keeper's job to remember all our history, and as her First it's mine too."
